I have been back and forth emailing a dealer for 2 days now, and I just told him I would bring "an" amount of cash with me. I've got to go look at two other trucks, so I figured why not go look at this way overpriced one. He wants $12k, and I am only gonna bring $9k, but in cash. How likely is it that I seal the deal? Do I have the upper hand?

Not sure where that is in my post, but judging by the amount of down votes, everyone is reading into the OP what they want to read.

Why would anyone finance at the dealership

They cannot come close to USAA or penfeds rates

ford typically has rebates that are tied to ford financing, as has been discussed in this thread

3 times so far, I have financed with ford to save an extra 1000 or 1500, and all three times I refinanced with the credit union soon thereafter

going directly to the credit union would have cost me money

That's a lot of leg. I'd say not good but you can always pay your own taxes and lic at the dmv within 30 days of purchase so the 9k could buy the car but not pay the essentials

Thats the thing, taxes and doc fees. We only charge 499 for doc and 18 for license but your looking around a grand for taxes that the dealer doesnt get to keep.

Why do you think you would get a better deal paying cash?

Lol.

What knucklehead pays $499 docs?

$100 + tax and that's generous, IMO.

They do get a savings. They're saved the embarrassment of financing a cash like a loser instead of paying cash like a winner.

Cash surprises people. Hit a small time dealer with a fat stack of cash, and he might forget about the big picture. Besides, the truck is only worth $9500 anyway, but he still has it at $12k

And the dealer still has to turn in money for the taxes. Even if its worth 9500. Also its a fluctuating market value. My truck lost over a grand in the last 2 months.

Yeah, OK.

Be honest, what % pays that?

We have a BMW dealer that pulls that on the reg, I guess the buyers think that's part of the BMW "experience".

We arent out to cheat people. Its one of the lowest doc fews around here. Tax is 7.7 percent we dont get to keep. We then have to pay accountants, finance managers, and others. Hell the chevy place right next to us is 899. Nobody ever complains about the doc fee.

It's a made up number. Only fools agree to pay something so ridiculous.

It's not illegal. If they pay it, they pay it.

Its a set price for us. It will get paided one way or another. Its sort of like the owner of a bar paying for his drinks. Keeps business running without misses. So nobody gets around it unless youre on a certain dealer plan such as a retired ford employee which ford then pays it.

If it is part of the price that is quoted before I get there, I don't mind it. But if you quote me a price, then add the doc fee after we agreed on a price, then you lied to me and upped the price of the vehicle.

You are so full of crap. $499 doc fee is low?

What happened to you supposedly being honest in this thread?

How am I being dishonest by saying we have the lowest in the area? I live in tennessee douche, not louisiana! You obviously dont shop at major dealerships.

And tax title and fee is always stated before negotiations by me. Id be mad if we agreed on a price and someone hit me with a extra unknown charge also.

"It gets padded" is right.

I'm not negotiating 4 different prices with you people.
One price; the car. Taxes aren't negotiated, I know what they are. If you have a doc fee that every numbnuts pays you'll put it with your price, I don't GAS.

I guarantee you, not many people agree to pay another $500 on top of a negotiated deal.

Typical car dealer scam.
