Today my wife brought my attention to a mystery in our basement.

A storage crate nearly identical to this was in our basement stacked on top of two other identical crates. On top of that, was a recently decommissioned baby car seat. The car seat was bone dry. The top crate had three inches of water in it. The two crates below had zero water. Other than the water, all three crates were empty.

When she brought my attention to it, I did the Man inspection, no water coming from above, no pipes running overhead above it.

The water was not rancid or sewage-y, no smell, and perfectly clear.

Years ago, there was a leaky refrigerator above the area, but it was replaced years before my wife placed these spare empty bins there.

I'm out of ideas, so I thought I'd bring it here.

Pics of wife in the Pool Board thread.

At least it isn't a mystery beep. I would have traded you for the mystery water yesterday.

Three inches is quite a lot.

Only a leak would make sense to me.

After my inspection of the ceiling, I wondered if we'd ever used it as a surplus cooler or something like that, but we have regular coolers, and we don't host parties where that kind of thing would be needed to begin with. And the last time I ever had a party big enough for something like that to be needed was three years ago. The water would have evaporated or been nasty as frick. Additionally, my wife says she only stacked them there a few months ago, but take that with a grain of salt.

Either a decomposing body part or you've found your urination spot during sleepwalking.

I used to do it roommate's humidifier. Except I wasn't sleepwalking. And I remembered doing it. And I did it on purpose... so not 100% exactly the same.

ETA: something in there contains moisture and since it was the Box on top it was exposed to the difference in temperature from inside and outside probably from the ceiling and the general coolness of the basement thus causing condensation

That car seat was holding years worth of arse-sweat. It's bone dry because everything has leaked out. I bet that car seat is lighter than you remember it.
