Funny that you mentioned this because I just read the above article yesterday. They speculate he was perhaps flying an Su-27 Flanker in a simulated dogfight.

How about a pilot was flying an Advanced Russin fighter that was provided to us by Vietnam. This flight was based out of none other than Groom Lake base, which is also known as Area 51.
So "US Ally, Vietnam gives the US advanced Russian fighter that is later crashed at area 51" not a cool enough story?

I heard it was possibly an adversarial aircraft we aren't supposed to have. SU-27? Or maybe a F-117. Apparently there's a few still flying for research purposes.
Crash happened during daylight so doubt it was a top secret UFO/Aurora/etc.
Pilot was a true badass though. 6 degrees and multiple combat sorties. RIP sir
