doubt anyone on here would want any part of a setup like that, all of those assholes from the northeast are obnoxious as hell, give them some thing to feel "elite" about(a 55+ club for example,) and that pseudo snobby elitist attitude magnifies
This is very true, but keep in mind The Villages don’t attract wealthy people from the north. It’s people with very limited wealth who move there to feel special.

what way is it a cautionary tale?
Having to pick your retirement chapter of life based on what you can afford. Only to be stuck in a cookie cutter community with zero culture surrounded by white trash in 100+ degree heat with 100% humidity.
The upside is driving to the community pool kept warm by lots of piss in a decked out golf cart with a margarita in hand blasting some jimmy Buffet songs in the hopes of grinding on some four time married sloot.

Not forced to retire there, I want to retire there. I know it's not for everyone and of course we are all limited by what we can afford. As for piss filled pools, show me where that can't happen, including your backyard pool.

Yea, it's a far cry from Marianna, which is quite possibly the hottest place on earth in the summer

As a trucker who has traveled all 48 states, I find almost all states get hot in the summer, but our winters are worth it.

Honestly, I’ve never been there. The people I knew from up north that moved there gave me a really bad impression even though by all accounts they love it there.
There’s plenty of pros and cons to retiring anywhere. If you like it there you shouldn’t let trash talk on a message board change your mind.

I watched a documentary about the villages on YouTube. They showed some old guy widower who was living in his van there trying to snag a rich widow.
They interviewed a few of the rich widows who knew what he was up to and said many men show up to meet their "retirement fund" lol

evening live music and dancing
Of course, typical OT, have to shite on anything positive. Ignore the foolish ones. If anyone wants to research, there are numerous videos (like Peter S's) that debunk the whole swinger thing.
Definately on the list for 3-month stays when the hot nurse wife commences her travel nurse phase and I continue retirement next year.
We won't be there in the summer / early fall. Would target spring as I'll be fishing while she works / sleeps. But we are dancers (and not swingers) so looking forward to the daily live music / parties. Not sure if we live on the property or just nearby. I'm guessing they have some golf cart Uber option for non-locals.

98% of the population has to choose a lifestyle based on what they can afford. I don't see how that's some attack point here. And the Villages aren't exactly dirt cheap - houses cost more than the national average per square foot and all of the amenity fees, insurance and other costs are higher than the national average for that stuff too. So even if you think it's low rent, just remember that over half of the country is doing worse. Also keep in mind, the fundamental tradeoff for many retirees is not having to work 8 hours every day. If that requires a little downsizing or relocating, so be it. If you live to work, by all means go out with your boots on but most people would prefer to play golf or hit the pool bar at happy hour while they are still healthy enough to do those things.

Better than having a heart attack trying to dig your car out of the snow or paying $2000/month for heating oil so you don't freeze to death. There's a reason people move South when they get old. The heat is better than the harsh winters. It's something we learn the hard way as we age.

The golf cart rentals were $80 a day if I recall. If you rent a home, most will be cart included.

Like minded people. Hard to find when moving from “home”.

Buddy of mine suggested we all move there when we retire. I essentially repeated your post to him.

Why is it always white = no culture?

That paradigm is significantly shifting. 40 years ago the wealthy people in the north moved to Florida to escape the harsh northern winters. There’s not a person I know with means that isn’t searching out a mild summer rather than a normal winter. Winters aren’t once what they were in the past. People have also discovered the northwest mountain region that isn’t as bad as the northeast. There is a reason why Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Utah have been booming.

It's Californians moving there not retirees.

Not sure where that narrative came from. Aside from college students I’ve yet to meet someone who has moved from California to Colorado. For every person I know who has a second home in Florida I know someone who has a second home in Colorado or Montana. I’m leaving Florida for the season on Monday.
In Idaho I wouldn’t describe the people who moved there from California as liberal. The people from California that live in Idaho are as far right as anyone I’ve ever met. The Boise people are very liberal. Most come from Oregon, Washington, or the east coast. The two term Mayor of Boise is from the Boston area.
