Antiquetiger, do you do auctions?

Now, a little over a year ago, I came across an on line estate auction in New Orleans. They had four pieces of Newcomb College pottery. I won all four auctions for $900 total. I did flip them for nearly $2000, but the excitement wasn’t there other than a few minutes of joy from finally getting pieces of NC pottery (something that I‘ve been wanting to do for 18 years).

I do want to find another piece (in the wild), to add to my collection.

I’ve seen one other piece in the wild but they wanted $1500

Antique, you ever run across rock and mineral collections at these sales? Crystals, geodes, etc.

I’d potentially be interested in anything that’s nickle-plated!

ETA: Got any pics?

My only garage sale find (in the last ten years):

Friend calls and says "there might be an old train station at this garage sale" so I drive over. Sure enough, this station was in the corner - an early (1910's) Ives station with cast windows and doors. Bought it for $50, value about $2500.

you know, im all for a good find...but frick this shite

if you knew what it was ahead of time (and based on you getting a phone call and rushing over, im saying you did) be a decent person and tell the owners what they have, then offer a fair price

or, at least dont come on board to brag about the skull frickin you put on "those idiots"

I didn't know what it was until I arrived.

I overpay for trains all the time if someone brings them to my office and are local.

Around 1985, old train guy (in his late 70s at the time) was prowling the garage sales when he recognizes two Clementine Hunter paintings (each with minor damage) hanging in the garage.

He asks if they are for sale. Old white woman conducting the garage sale tells him "oh, those by the n----- painter." He ends up buying both for $25. He took them out to Hunter's house and she touched them up to repair them. He sold them for a nice profit.

For $30, two large bins of Thomas the Train pieces. There are over 100 vehicles, 300 pieces of track and miscellaneous items, and a couple dozen buildings.

Value: $300-$600

I love when people claim values like this. I wise man once pointed out that there are 2 theoretical values for items; what you are willing to part with it for and what someone is willing to buy it for. The REAL value is the lesser of the two.

If those Thomas the Train pieces are truly worth anywhere near $300 to $600, please point me to the fool willing to pay that. I have at least $1000 up in a plastic tub in my attic.

Have you gone on eBay and looked at “Sold” auctions of Thomas the Train?

My $300-$600 estimate maybe low.

105 vehicles at $2 each and 20 buildings at $5 each (both are low estimates), adds up to over $300. Most vehicles go for over $3 each and buildings go for over $15 a piece.

This doesn’t even include the 300 pieces of track and miscellaneous stuff.

Dumbasses like you are the reason I’ve been in this hobby for 20 years.

Edit:

Here are two auctions. These are sold prices, not asking prices

What are you considering rough shape?

The ones I have are in pretty nice, played with condition. I’ve seen ones mint in the boxes, they bring higher money.
If you are talking about where they are missing wheels, colored on, massive paint loss, then yes, they are worth less.

Rounded, chipped edges with paint missing. I have always been told that significantly reduces value, so I wanted to see if the $20 each is in this type of condition.
