Regular 4-stroke Briggs and Stratton 5.5 hp. Started up fine this morning, got a partial cut in and all of a sudden the power cut in half or so.

I've changed the spark plug, sprayed carb cleaner, added gas additive, ran a bunch of the gas out and put in 0E gas, still doing the same shite.

Any ideas?

Update: Found a spring under the air filter had disconnected... Seems to be called the governor spring. Likely need a new one, but I reinserted into the tab hole and viola, started right up at full power.

I had the exact same problem with mine last year. I diagnosed the problem and went to Home Depot and bought a new one. This fixed the problem.

Did it make a ping sound before it quit?

Watched a neighbor mow their yard with one of these old school ones earlier today. Watched the whole process because it was impressive, never once had to stop or had any issues. I'm sure he has to spend some time sharpening those blades though.

Possibly, but it's running smooth, just low power. I've hit idle but no change.

That's what I'm leaning toward... Can't believe how expensive they are now.

Clean air filter next. If it still running 1/2 power, pull carb and clean thoroughly.

A thrown rod would likely cause your engine to abruptly stop so maybe it’s not that. Did you check your oil level before using?

Make sure nothing is wrapped around the blades/shaft. Rope/string/wire
