Did you you deal? Never been this sad/worried/etc. over a life event that didn’t involve a funeral. From the moment he was born I’ve been 100% focused on being “Dad” and while I will remain his Dad I won’t get to see him everyday, I can’t keep on him about his grades (won’t have access like in HS etc) or go grab him to toss the football in the yard or help with a project. I think I’m worried he’ll make all the mistakes I did, party like I did, etc.

I know this is a Dear diary post, but damn this is hard.

Let him make mistakes. He will learn like we all did. It’s time to let go.

If you are going to hold on, you have to let go.

You gotta be real with him. You know he's gonna do stupid shite so you need to talk to him man to man to tell him how to do dumb shite in a less risky manner.

Hopefully, you haven't turned him into a puss with your helicopter, overprotective BS. He needs to be a man, let him grow, stay out of his life as much as possible, don't get him out of jams, give him the expectations up front and don't waiver. Personally, I was glad to get mine out of the house.

That’s the approach I’ve been taking when discussing it.

Mine grew up in a small town so I made them go away for college. I wanted them to know there was a world out there to explore even if they decided to come back. It’s good for them.

What you really need to prepare for is when the last one leaves. Mom’s especially struggle with this.

Main thing you need to try and make sure he know going forward is.... control alcohol, and glove up before you shove up...

I’m facing the same in about 4 yrs except with a daughter.(no pics you pervs) got to let them live their own life. Think back to when you where 18yo, young, dumb, and full of cum!!

Tell him to keep his nose clean & do well in school or he will be looking for a studio apartment & working at Walmart to pay his bills.

I never felt this way, can’t understand those who do…I like being a parent, it was intentional and never a burden or something I resented.

This! Fentanyl is real. Tell him to stick to drinking beer and maybe smoking a little dope, but leave that hard shite alone. Eat right, exercise, take care of grades before having fun. Wrap his tool and keep his head on a swivel.

Other than that, have fun.

Yep. This is when I transitioned from thinking of him like a kid to a man. I just tell him stuff he may not be aware of, but understand he will make his own choices and missteps. Its actually a really good feeling.
