I am trying to maximize my trashiness level to pull behind my Duramax. The wife and I are deciding between a toy we want for us and our two kids (12 & 13) to enjoy.

Her vote is a pontoon boat (party barge) that we can cruise around on and chill.

My vote is for a 4-seater Side by Side that we can all go trail riding in.

Just to reiterate, we are trashy, these choices are trashy, I know.

Boat. Absolutely no question.

Not so subtle brag btw.

Where?

Do you have access to land to go riding?

You'll likely get a lot more use out of the boat

That 4 seat side by side will break every time you ride it.

your wife is smart. Not sure if the OT thinks they're trashy or not but I'd pick the boat too.

Why don’t y’all compromise and get a divorce? Then she can buy the boat with your child support money, and you can buy the side by side and trail ride it by yourself since your wife left you and your kids don’t want to waste the weekends with their friends to spend just a few hours of time with you.

If you are close to water seems like your family might enjoy the boat more...and more opportunities for them to have friends come along, etc.

Easy choice. They don't make truck nutz for a boat.

ETA: Nevermind... I've been enlightened by an OysterPoBoy they do make boat nutz

Something you will enjoy a couple of times as a family, maybe. Get the boat.

Can the side by side do a wheelie? If not, go with the pontoon boat. I've never heard of anyone that regretted a boat purchase.

Comes down to how often you are going to use either one. I looked at a boat years ago until I realized I would probably use it once or maybe twice a month in the summer. The numbers don’t add up for that type of usage. If you don’t live on the water or become the type of family that heads for the river every weekend it just doesn’t make sense. Hell, for three or four times a summer just rent one.

Same goes for that massive four seater. Where are you possibly going to ride that thing?

Toys are for trash. Put the money in a college fund or investment.

Kids will have a lot more fun on the boat, and when the expense gets too much, you can offload it on some other poor sap with less depreciation. Make sure to keep a good maritime lawyer on retainer if you plan on engaging in any illicit activities in international waters.

Boat. Picnic on the water, your wife can lay across the seats sipping on some fancy Franzia wine...while you stand on the bow in jorts with a Natty Light in one hand and a fishing pole in the other.

Pontoon boats aren't inherently trashy, IMO.
