He’s going to be fine. Like someone said, the worst part is seeing him coming out of surgery still intubated. Postop day #1 is the worse as far as pain is concerned, but it gets exponentially better each day after that. As long as he ambulates early and often, and works on that incentive spirometer (little plastic breathing apparatus to help inflate the lungs...it’s gonna hurt because of the sternal incision), he’s gonna recover faster and better.
Push him to walk as much as possible...that’s the key to get out of the hospital and back home.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I just got the first update and so far he's doing fine. He was a ticking time bomb. They said he had severe >95% blockage in 4 arteries.

Hoping for the best. I’ll send a prayer or two up for your dad.
My mother went through heart surgery about 3-4 years ago. She had clots, some internal bleeding, etc. and still pulled through fine. We had a few scary moments but I guess the heightened fear of potentially losing a loved one played into that quite a bit. As others have said, this type of procedure is second nature to these docs.

My dad had a triple bypass, uncle on his side a triple, and my other uncle on his side had a double or triple as well. All are in great shape, so I think it's hereditary. All are doing well. It's scary for sure though.

He should do great. That procedure has really gotten better over the years. My prayers to your Dad.

Hang in there... it’ll be a long day but he’ll be better off when he’s done.

It's threads like this with the outpouring of encouragement that make me love my fellow SEC brethren. Thank you. He's still under but so far he is doing well. It pains me to think of him laying there cut open. I don't have the closest relationship with him but this has helped center me quite a bit.
My wife's birthday is today so that has been a good distraction from dwelling on it.
Seriously, thank you all for all the kind words.

My Dad had a quad at 70. He lived until he was almost 91, walking every day, driving, going to meetings etc... His heart was still in great shape, but he got pneumonia. His life was very full. Prayers for your Dad.

My MIL had a quintuple bypass a few months back after a massive heart attack. She’s doing ok now as I’m sure your dad will be also, but wanted to tell you to pay close attention to how he reacts to his medication after surgery. I can’t remember which one it was, but one pill she was prescribed really messed with her mental state and we had to get her off of it.
