Or whatever Ghana be the name of this new city-led task force to study safety changes to Mardi Gras.

Everyone is talking about how the city is trying to force Endymion to move uptown.

I have a better idea. Move everyone else to Mid-City.

I always assumed the uptown route won out because of the political realities of the wealthy living uptown and wanting to preserve their route.

Obviously there are huge ramifications to this, both public and private. But, if you were starting fresh, wouldn't it make more sense to have the route be the mid-city route?

The mid-city route has a lot more room to stand and move around. There are a lot more diversion options if for some reason, a parade needs a diversion option. The starting zone has a lot more room to line up, and you don't start off on narrow streets like some of the uptown parades do.

Lots of mid-city is gentrifying, and I'd argue that no part of that route is currently as unsafe as when the St. Charles route passes through central city area.

The mid-city route is longer. Maybe for some parades, you shorten it up a bit. You could start at Orleans and Carrollton, or even Canal at Carrollton. You could end at Canal and Tchoup. The mega-krewes can follow the route of Endymion to end up at the convention center.

You might even get less of the drunk college kids to come from Tulane and Loyola if you are always in mid-city.

I'm sure I'll get a lot of downvotes, but I'm struggling to see why the uptown route is so much better.

How about just hiring people to walk along the sides of the floats like the marching bands' chaperones, it would easily prevent people from stepping too close to them. They do that for the BR St. Patrick's day parade and it works.

they were doing this at orpheus on monday, people were still right next to the floats.

how about the riders just throw beads further instead of dropping them right next to the floats

Unless there are barricades no one would agree to do this due to the fact they may get tackled and end up under the float.

The mid-city route is awful. Traffic is terrible. Disaster for so many reasons. For all I care, mid-city can keep Endymion.

Side note: connect the tandem floats with a netting. Problem solved for Latoya.

Why do you say that?

Traffic is terrible.

Is that due to the number of people attending Endymion, or due to the route?

Mid City route has more traffic options than uptown.

Probably gonna sound like an a-hole, but I wouldn't change anything. Just let natural selection continue to run it's course.

They would riot if the city tried moving the uptown parades to mid city. Not to mention all the restaurants, bars, and hotels along the St Charles route that are packed for parades.

I have to agree with this... If someone is willing to put their life in danger for some cheap arse Mardi Gras throws, then that's on them.

Keep Endymion away from Uptown and keep everything else how it is. Bacchus gets crazy enough, I don't want all of the crowds for Endymion Uptown.

I’m pretending the OP is just trolling and not at all being serious.

But I’m afraid he’s serious.

Sounded like they were only concerned with tandems and the ability to slip or cross into the gap since all they did was separate each one into a single float. So basically this is all that needs to be done to the floats. Just cover the junction to prevent people from going into the gap.

If someone falls under a float then it's no different than if it was a single float and this whole commission is a moot point.

Ok. It was an idea. I admitted it was a crazy idea.

Yet, no one has answered this question: If you were starting anew, why would you choose the uptown route over the mid-city route?

If we didn't have a dumbass as mayor and police chief, most of the Endymion floats could have re-routed around the accident site (Canal to Galvez (or Broad or Rocheblave) to Tulane to back to Canal, or to Claiborne to back to Canal).

You don't have those options in Uptown.
