re: My crazy idea for the Mardi Gras Safety Commission to consider...

Sounded like they were only concerned with tandems and the ability to slip or cross into the gap since all they did was separate each one into a single float. So basically this is all that needs to be done to the floats. Just cover the junction to prevent people from going into the gap.
Well, that accounts for one of the two deaths. The other had nothing to do with the gap. And the two who fell off Thoth floats had nothing to do with a gap.
If this commission is serious (I have my doubts) there are probably some improvements they can make to bring Mardi Gras into the 21st century.
No doubt the more likely scenerio is that this commission is a monkey-poo-flinging exercise that changes nothing and just angers people.

How about just hiring people to walk along the sides of the floats like the marching bands' chaperones, it would easily prevent people from stepping too close to them. They do that for the BR St. Patrick's day parade and it works.
How about floating barricades attached to the float that keep people a minimum distance from the floats.
It may make the floats F-uglier, but it is for safety.

Which is why the tandem ban was ridiculous. It was an emotionally charged knee-jerk reaction. Especially when you consider that the tandem ban actually would have allowed the float from Endymion to parade as a tandem because it was powered by a trailer generator.
As for the riders falling, that is just on them. As a rider you are given and required to wear a harness that goes around your waist and attached to the floor. Now unless they fell while unharnessed for a trip to the bathroom I've got nothing.

Bc the mid city route sucks
The only reason Endymion rolls in Mid City bc that’s where they started and it’s tradition. No one wants to roll in Mid City and people don’t really want to go to mid city for multiple parades.

Agreed, it was a "We have to do SOMETHING!" moment and that's what they did. It made no sense especially after the trailer generator change, but... it didn't really hurt anything either.

One was unharnessed and fell over while leaning over to hand out something.
The other was away from his spot on the float and leaning on the back door of the float when it unexpectedly opened and he tumbled out.

Well for the leaning over guy that's on him for unharnessing himself. I know for Endymion a few years back the fire marshall would actually come through and secure the float doors from the outside to make sure riders couldn't exit the float along the route or prior to the unloading zone at the end.

That seems like a terrible idea, what if there is an emergency on the float?

Yet, no one has answered this question: If you were starting anew, why would you choose the uptown route over the mid-city route?
Because the uptown route is what any sane person thinks of when they think Mardi Gras. No one is thinking about Orleans or fricking Canal

If we didn't have a dumbass as mayor and police chief, most of the Endymion floats could have re-routed around the accident site (Canal to Galvez (or Broad or Rocheblave) to Tulane to back to Canal, or to Claiborne to back to Canal).
You don't have those options in Uptown.
Nyx could have moved from Magazine to Tchop then come up Napoleon just like Bacchus does.
The mayor being a moron should have no bearing in this discussion

Well, ok. I guess it's just me then, and the tons of other people that turn out for Endymion.

HOW? They line up going on Jefferson headed back towards Tchop. How would they have turned around to head back to Tchop?

Didn't say no one went to Endymion, but cool strawman none the less.

They could use whatever cross street they ended up using to get back to the convention center via Thcop.

Nope, started in Gentilly.. That's why its official name is The Gentilly Carnival Club...
Originally started on Desaix BLVD..

They waited until Magazine reopened, and then took that to Napoleon, to Tchop, to the convention center.

No strawman. Other parades uptown may draw larger crowds than they do uptown.
Maybe try it for a year? You might be surprised. I might be totally wrong.

Only younger people believe this bs... For years parades rolled on Canal... They were all forced uptown, except for Endymion.. after Katrina...
However, Endymion rolled uptown twice... 2006 after Katrina behind Bacchus because we were rained out, and when the streetcars were being put on Canal... and it sucked, floats were way too big...
It’s funny, Krewe of Mid City rolls uptown...

I agree with you. The Endymion route is much better than the old uptown route.
Posted on 2/26/20 at 5:43 pm to LSUFanHouston
It’s simple
Suspend the big krewes for these deaths
No parading on the neutral ground
Make them hire vendors and not allow outside alcohol
It worked at LSU

I hate uptown float huggers so much it'd be tempting to do it for free
