Adidas is closing its high-tech 'robot' factories in the US and Germany just 3 years after the first one opened
Adidas started production of shoes largely by robots at its "Speedfactory" in the southern town of Ansbach near its Bavarian headquarters in 2016, and opened another near Atlanta in 2017.

Adidas plans to close high-tech "robot" factories in Germany and the United States it launched to bring production closer to customers, saying on Monday deploying some of the technology in Asia would be "more economic and flexible."
Founded by German cobbler Adi Dassler in 1949, Adidas has shifted most of its production from Europe to Asia and now relies on more than 1 million workers in contract factories, particularly in China and Vietnam.
However, Adidas said on Monday production at the two factories would be discontinued by April 2020 at the latest as it focuses instead on using the technologies they pioneered to produce shoes at two of its suppliers in Asia.
The suppliers would use the techniques to make a broader range of products with a short production time, not just running shoes, while Adidas will keep testing manufacturing processes at its so-called adiLab site in Scheinfeld in Germany.
It said it would continue to work with Oechsler, the German company which operates the two factories, in other manufacturing areas, such as producing soles for its springy Boost shoes, as well as soles for soccer shoes and advanced 3D printed soles.

Wow robots are even cheaper in China

You pay a guy in Asia and China 5 dollars a day with no benefits to operate a robot instead of paying a worker in the United States or Germany 50k/yr plus benefits. Industries across America are making these decisions on a daily basis.

So labor in China and Vietname is still cheaper than using robots in America?

Very little damage from WWII.
They have a Bach Festival there every year.

I recently toured a high end bicycle frame manufacturer located in Little Rock. The guy showing me around said people in here are making $15/hr while they would be paying someone in China for the same labor $2/day. Blew my mind

If i were gonna make the decision for a large scale operation between paying crap loads in salary and benefits in the US or $2/day in China, I’m going China all day.

this. and people just don't seem to get it. I'm all for keeping things in the US but capitalism is built on profit not heart felt emotion.

I think Yang is on to something when he slacks about automation and how it’s killing the US worker. However, I do not believe that it’s killing it as bad as China, India, Vietnam, Mexico, and Malaysia are killing it.
However, I do not think that the answer is UBI.
ETA: and it’s all our fault that we’re getting our asses kicked by those countries. Thank you unions.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say those numbers are still exaggerated... Hard to believe with China’s humanitarian efforts, but I venture to say It anyways.

ASEAN countries along with China, India and Mexico will eventually experience rising wage prices then the next major labor market will most likely be in African countries.

I have to go there for business twice per year and $3.60 is low. The pay is about $5.00/hour now for a worker in a manufacturing plant. Walk around any of the bigger Chinese cities and they all have nice clothes, cell phones and go out to restaurants and nightclubs. They live in tiny, cramped apartments but are very materialistic and fashion conscious. The old people still wear the Mao uniforms and avoid Starbucks but 40 y/o and under are woke to western culture.

Interesting, what about the people who don’t live in the city and work at the manufacture plants away from large cities?

Is that Allied? He acquired Guru's manufacturing equipment. I've been looking at the Able for a next bike.
