I guess you make a good point. Maybe self selecting yourself out is ok.

I guess it would be weird if later down the road this kid became like a faux-patriot that was pro-military even though he quit

It’s his choice. He wasn’t drafted. His country didn’t call him to service. Also, with the way things are going I would be worried too.

Honestly what’s the percentage of 18-25 year olds who join a service? Anyone who doesn’t join have no honor?

The military is not for everyone. Dropping out does not make him a coward or less of a man. If he had abandoned his post during a deployment, that would qualify as cowardly. But, I hope he reevaluates. Plenty of non-combat roles in the Army.

It takes a man to know his own limits. Don't listen to anyone who calls him a pussy. He would've gotten people killed.

Easy there, Mr Anti-war hippy...United States involvement in war is a necessity for the safety and freedom.

Cool it with the language, take a breather, and thank a vet, pardner ?

I find it odd that plenty of other countries prescribe to the exact opposite and they're more economically and socially free the the USA.

Another good point...someone that doesn’t think they have the strength, courage, and leadership to join the military should not be anywhere near the level of responsibility that being in the military entails

No. He had the balls to at least try. It's still a profession, shouldn't treat any diff than a random dude changing jobs.

Excellent! Another good point. This kid at least had the balls to give the military a go. Interesting and enlightening perspective

Agreed. Sucks for him but at least his actions really only fall on him. Where as if he went to war and froze up and got everyone killed it would be worse than being called a coward

Nope. I think that the Army and all the rest of them will let you out before you finish Basic Training. All you have to do is tell them that you need to get out of the military for your own mental health.

Not really. Less than 6 months and you can get an uncharacterized discharge if you are a fuyck up but It is the choice of the Army not the soldier, and the discharge is for individuals that are incompatible with military service. Not just wanting to go home.

The soldier could just as easily get an article 15 or a court martial for their refusal to perform.

If you join the military and quit, you have no honor. Especially if you quit because you're afraid of war.

Everyone who goes to war is afraid. But they have honor.

You don’t “drop out” of the Army (unless a ton has changed) once you are in. You either get some sort of questionable discharge or go AWOL or dessert.

Yes in a non-draft environment he’s a coward. He didn’t have to sign up.

That’s kind of how I feel about it too. I know it sounds really bad, but let’s be honest here...kids don’t exactly make the most informed decisions sometimes and God knows recruiters aren’t exactly honest about everything that goes along with joining. It’s not entirely unreasonable to think that kid probably had NO idea what he was getting himself into. It’s better he realize it now and bow out then be a complete frick up or trouble maker in the ranks.

You can be granted a Entry Level Separation during the first 180 days of service for a multitude of reasons, being unable to adapt emotionally and socially to military life is one. Your discharge will simply indicate "Entry Level Separation"

Did he "drop out" or did he become a DEP loss and just not ship to basic?
