When I was young, my sister "ran away". My parents wouldn't let her go somewhere so she waited until everyone was sleeping and left. My parents didn't know she was in a "serious" relationship with the guy, but they found out from one of her friends and they told them where he lived.
I was with them when they went to his apartment. My dad knocked forcefully and when the guy unlocked the door, my dad didn't even give him time to open the door, he opened it and grabbed the guy by the throat, told my sister to go get in the car. I didn't see or hear what my dad did because my mom took me back to the car, but that was something my dad would have never done in any other situation.
What he did was "illegal", but if you mess with someone's teenage daughter, you better hope she has a daddy who doesn't give a frick about her.

It's pretty inappropriate reaction for teenagers doing what teenagers do. Despite what is being said here by some, and irrelevant to any debate about the legality of it, it is an implicit threat. Anyone saying any different is willfully lying. If it weren't a threat then what is the point of doing it? And what is the point of that threat? "If you behave in a way that I almost definitely did as a teenager or at least attempted then there are going to be mortal repercussions." Does that seem right?
It's also just a dumb way to teach a lesson. This sort of move is made just because your brother in law is too incompetent as a parent to actually teach the teenagers an actual lesson.
