I was passed over for a promotion once too because they relied on me so much at my current position. In hindsight it was a blessing in disguise though because that position is the scapegoat for everything goes wrong and nobody lasts 6 months in it.

They are going to fire you in 2 weeks. Fire up that resume and job hunt.

I was just recently passed over for a lateral move that I felt would have given me more knowledge, just made me more marketable if you will because it was the same title, but in a completely different department I had no experience in.
My boss told me he just didn't think it was the right fit and him and his boss see much bigger things in my future, and he felt this wasn't the right stepping stone for me.
I otherwise would have been pretty ticked off, and I'm still not entirely happy about it, but my boss also happens to be my best friend of about 15 years, so I trust him more than just a normal boss, but we'll see how it plays out eventually.

How'd the meeting go?

Give him time. They already took his PC and work phone and are monitoring him clean his desk out before security escorts him out.

It sounds like you are the only person they can find to do your job. Seems like you are quite valuable to this company now. Time to demand a raise.

3 options
1. negotiate split time
2. negotiate leaving after x months
3. take it to HR.
if you're ready for more responsibility you should be able to manage through this and not come bitching to a message board.
maybe your not mature enough to be promoted.

While doing so on the company's dime

Maybe they thought you weren’t the best person for the position

blocked it by saying they cant hire/ backfill so cant let me transfer.
A nice way of saying they don’t think you can handle the job.

Ask them to explain to you why you couldn't be promoted this time. Then ask them about upward mobility and your future at the company. Then ask them for a fair increase in pay to keep you. If you don't like their answers, thank them for the meeting, go home, write a resignation letter, update your resume, then quit.

I guess in some cases, but there are definitely cases where the employee has the leverage.
For very short periods of time, sure, but in the long run you usually don't.

If they cannot rectify this then I would stay on with a business as usual approach, but start looking. You might find a better job somehwere else but it is not guaranteed.
Never quit a job until you have another. You may think you showed them by quitting but you may screw yourself. Don't burn bridges with them even if you find another job. Those references may be worth somethimg some day.
