My 94 year old grandfather is in the ICU—should I brace for the worst?

He’s been in the hospital for a week, and got moved to the ICU yesterday morning due to his oxygen levels getting low. He’s been in atrial fibrillation for the better part of 2-3 months. They have him sedated and hooked up to an intubator to help with his oxygen levels. Blood pressure is really low (96/47 as of about an hour ago).
The nurses are just doing their job and being optimistic for the sake of my dad, I don’t know how much of their optimism is truth and how much of it is just them being nice. Obviously he’s lived a long and happy life. He’s a WW2 Vet and a fighter and a winner either way. I guess what I’m asking for is if anybody that may have any experience with stuff like this/or knowledgeable enough about this stuff to tell me what to do/expect.

He’s on a ventilator? Why would your parents do that to him...?

I realize that. He hadn’t had any types of struggles whatsoever with health until the last month or so though. It just shocks me that it could go down hill so fast

Brace is wrong word.
At 94, should be lesson for going with the flow as death approaches.

Best tell him goodbye while you can. It’s hard to come back from much at 94.

Tell him you love him and then tell him goodbye. My grandfather passed last summer at 90. I told him I loved him and that I would see him in the afterlife. He was close to passing so he was barely able to whisper that he loved me too. That is my last memory of him and it is a strangely peaceful one.

We all have our time and chances of it being his are very high. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, but I'm saying to be hoping for what is best for him.

It’s an intubator. And because his sat levels dropped yesterday morning and the doctors recommended that was what we should do

Totally understandable. Look at elderly patients like a vehicle, parts go bad the older they get...
If he has some type of lung issues, it will be difficult to get him off the vent. But many elderly pt’s have surprised me. Good luck...

Bless his heart for his service to this country. Sounds like he was very loved. Keep him comfortable and be grateful for the lifetime you’ve got to spend with him.

Say "goodbye" without actually saying the word. Let him know what he means to you. be prepared for, and accepting of, what will happen.

We haven’t talked to a doctor since yesterday, hope to talk with one by Monday at the latest. The nurses have been kind and attentive. Said nothing has really changed since incubating him, and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad thing
