A carpenter bee doesn't sting. When I was a kid we used to catch them and tie a string around them and let them fly around with us holding the string. It was like holding a balloon.
You can tell a carpenter bee from a bumble bee by the yellow dot right on the nose of the carpenter bee. We used to catch them with our hands. We would swat them onto the ground and then pounced on them and grab them with our hands.
