For the people who live in these houses, the Mississippi is underfoot, literally.

Pics from Saturday morning, East Bank levee at the Jefferson/Orleans Parish border, where there are 8-10 houses on the river side of the levee.

Is that a fuel tank on the left side of the house in the first pic?

Edit: looks like a septic tank

If I lived on the river side of the levee I would be unnerved all the time.

There aren't a lot of those houses left...my cousin lived in one by the Algiers ferry terminal many years ago...

Seems like they're still doing ok...

Still have several feet to go and the river is at historic levels.

And Bonne Carre is open. They’ll be ok.

I'm familiar with a boat house but I think these people are taking it a little too far.

Why are there homes on that side of the levee?

As long as their houses are above 17', I doubt they will have a problem.

Once the Mississippi gets above 17', there will be much bigger problems to worry about.

It is a little piece of property on the Jefferson -Orleans parish line on the East Bank. It has been in litigation. I don’t know how to post links but there is some reading available. Google it The River should not get any higher there as Bonnet Carre is open.

I don't think they're camps. I believe people live there full time.

The residents and the parish have been fighting over these houses since at least the mid-90s. I think a settlement was reached where the owners could stay until they died, but that was 25+ years ago. It would suck balls to have to schlep everything over the levee. It would really suck to be 80 years old and have to do it.

They park in a driveway in their front yard when the river is not at flood. An attorney from New Orleans had a claim to it. The one that got disbarred after Katrina for allegedly being nuts.

Why do people live on the river side of the levee?

Why the hell do people choose to live in flood zones?

Ironically, the USACE generally doesn't approve of building inside the MS river levee. But guess where they built their HQ. You guessed it - inside the levee.
