Murders of whites more likely to mean death penalty in Louisiana.

The killers of white people in Louisiana are roughly five times as likely to be sentenced to death as the murderers of black people. Meanwhile, black people account for 72 percent of all homicide victims in the state — a comparison the report’s authors say shows implicit bias in the way juries and the courts go about punishing killers based on the race and gender of a victim.

So don't kill white people and you'll be fine

Why isn't it broken down into degrees? People don't get the death penalty for drug deals gone bad that turn into gunfights(Black ok black crime), but if you rob someone and kill them (black on white crime) thrn you're probably gonna fry.

I like my chances better if I just don't murder anyone.

that graphic is tough to process because it is all over the place.
- 80% of murders are male victims.
- 20% female.
- What about men who identify as women? Where is that line in here or do they lump them in with one of the other categories?
- 316 murderers were sentenced to death out of nearly 21000 murders? I wonder what the rate is of unsolved murders?
with the percentage so low on people sentenced to death, I would guess that most of those are probably people who kill multiple times and, therefore, receive the death penalty.

Yeah, two guys shooting each other over money, pussy or neighborhood turf is a whole different kind of murder than that of someone who murders a whole family in their home as they sleep, imo.
It's still killing. But I also agree that an 18 year old who has a teen girlfriend under 18..is different from a 55 year old man abducting kids from an elementary.

Study does not differentiate between degrees. Additionally, shouldn't the focus be on the race of the killer and not the victim?

Oh..there are many different shades of darkness.

I think we should have sentences more harsh than the death sentence.

It's certainly something valid and worth digging into to figure out why killing a white person seems to net much worse sentences.

Water is wet. Tell me something else.

Then we would have a non story.

Most blacks are killed by blacks. Black people are the witnesses. Black people won't testify in court against black people. There ain't nuthin I can do to change this.

Given that only 38 people have been executed since 1976 I think there are more important things to worry about.
Apparently more people are electrocuted in their own bathtubs each year than by the state.

Yeah? And cigarettes are still legal while cannabis is still classified with heroin.

You can only break it down so far when we're only talking about 38 executions over 40 years.
Speaking of which, I bet the study is at least somewhat skewed by juries from 1976 vs. juries of today.

Stats are bullshite.
Need to consider:
Charges - only some murders can carry possible death sentence
Prosecutors - subset of above (some don't pursue it because their offices don't have the resources or they just choose not to). Also, many black defendants may be looking at 3 strikes (life sentence) for a more easily provable charge.
Pleas - this is based on convictions/sentencing (are killers with black victims more likely to take a plea?)
Jury composition - you need unanimous verdict for death penalty. What jury pools (or individual jurors) are not voting for death and in what cases?

This stat has a lot to do with the witnesses (or lack of).
