This is the story you pick to justify your position?

It's going to be a crash course in economics. There really is a large fraction of people who look (or looked) at this as a welcome diversion. These people are learning that their employer is not a leprechaun with a pot of gold, who has suddenly been tricked into pulling a free months-long vacation out of his pot.
It calls to mind an experience I had in college. Young political science professor pauses his lecture for a few minutes to tell us how important economics class is, and how we should all take it, if only as an elective.
Simple-minded attractive young female raises her hand and says something like, "Oh, Professor, you shouldn't say that! My friend Jennifer tried to take economics and she said it was the most confusing thing she'd ever seen! Gosh, people, don't take economics unless you're really smart!"

She survived and is in stable condition. Thank goodness for that.
Kill yourself not someone else.

Someone that shoots their girlfriend and then themselves was going to find a reason to do it regardless of a virus outbreak

News came out that stimulus checks will take up to 20 or more weeks to get to their destination. I can see more suicides happening.
Many people out of work, have never been in this position, and cannot figure out how to survive. Book smart doesn't keep you alive, common sense and street smarts will.

It just points out a logical fallacy around the whole economic shutdown / "social distancing" thing: we are not trading a loss of wealth for life. Anyone who says, "yeah, this is an economic disaster, but it's good because it saves lives" is full of it.
There is absolutely no way to determine whether it saves lives or cost lives overall. When you make people poor, when you shut down airports, schools, etc., there is inevitably a cost in terms of human lives. This cost will be realized in ways that are, to varying degrees, indirect, but that does not make it less real.
People are only thinking emotionally and a ton here are guilty of it.
They'd rather the economy die than risk Grandpappy catching a virus that may or may not kill him.
Its estimated that 40k people died of suicide during the Great Depression alone, those numbers would be kid's play if that shite came back around today.
A good economy isnt just about someone's 401k, where is the money for healthcare if there isnt a stable economy?

Almost 50k killed themselves in 2019, with a booming economy. Based on these 2 facts, record high stock market must cause more suicides. There may be a slight disconnect between correlation and causation though.

For some reason I have a feeling this guy was gonna do something like this with, or without, the virus

Except the American population has more than doubled since the Great Depression.

People were going to suffer either way.
Suggesting not social distancing wouldn’t cause an economic impact or a mental health impact is disingenuous at best. You lose people on either side of it.

Yeah... but it lasted 4 years and was much closer to 1/3 the population. 4 x 1/3= a pool 33% larger than 2019 America

Those suicide estimates just included suicides that they felt were related whereas your numbers include all suicides.
Its no secret that more Americans likely commit suicide now today than ever although statistics are better reported now than ever so its possible the Great Depression numbers were actually much more.
At any rate, people are likely committing suicide now more than ever so another Depression would only add to that, hence my statement that 40k would look like kid's play if it happened today.
This article from 2011:
quote:
A new report issued today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that the overall suicide rate rises and falls with the state of the economy — dating all the way back to the Great Depression. The report, published in the American Journal of Public Health, found that suicide rates increased in times of economic crisis: the Great Depression (1929-1933), the end of the New Deal (1937-1938), the Oil Crisis (1973-1975), and the Double-Dip Recession (1980-1982). Those rates tended to fall during strong economic times — with fast growth and low unemployment — like right after World War II and during the 1990s.

The vast majority of those who catch the coronavirus will survive however a depression will negatively affect everyone today and for years to come.
