Most people in ultra thick fog don't want to look down at their speed even for a split second. Especially if they're on an interstate.

Always amazes me how close people follow while doing 65+ mph. Reaction time very low at that rate and above.

Drove home in this stuff this morning. It was bad past Manchac. Guess I missed all this
Working nights is gonna be fun tonight. I’ve got to figure out how the hell to get to work tonight. And driving home tomorrow morning is gonna be a ton of fun.

I remember watching a news piece (20/20 maybe?) back in the 90s discussing these massive wrecks in fog, and they kept finding high speeds to blame.
Logic would suggest you slow down instinctively in fog since you can't see, but the tests showed since you lack the perception of speed, you speed up. You can't see the world wizzing past you and end up going significantly faster than you think you are.
Just something that has stuck out to me this many years later.
Thanks for sharing this - something I never really thought about, but makes sense.

Most of them have no situational awareness at all and are completely oblivious to the danger

Was part of the ems response to this, 5 dead, 7 critical, 46 total pts transported to the hospital, looked like the fricking end of the world.

If only they put gadgets in cars that let you know how fast you are actually going it could probably solve this...
I agree, but we all have a natural perception of how fast we are going, that is dulled in heavy fog and the point of my post.

Hate to see this. Those cab over trucks don't offer much in the way of driver protection.

I think I saw the exact same thing. I was recounting this to someone I was driving with a few minutes ago.

Actually there is a state that has no speed limits. I think it is Montana. You never hear of wrecks like this insurance is not high there. Some countries even eliminated speed limits noting it did more harm than good. You want to put Morris Bart out of business? Eliminate speed limits. Insurance rates will drop.

It's still going on, it'll probably affect traffic tomorrow as well.

End of shift maybe?
Maybe the injured are out and now on to the vehicles.

No dash cam footage?
I'd imagine any dash cam footage is from vehicles still stuck in the mess

Sounds like EMS is done on the scene.

That is what I was thinking. Would that just put your insurance as the payee instead of trying to find out who would be at wrong? More than likely the chief cause would be the one with minimum coverage and would not have enough coverage to cover one accident let alone multiple ones.
