They’re not catering to locals. These gates and expansion are to impress tourists, and make it easier for them to flee the city.

The new MSY has been much better than I would have predicted. The parking is the one major issue. 90% of the time it’s fine, but every now and then they run out of spots. That shouldn’t happen.

Weird. Concourse A is very rarely used, and parking is already a nightmare. As much as Id love to get a direct flight to the Caribbean, Costa Rica or a few other domestic locations, is this really necessary?

30 is probably the high end plan. They always have plan to extend A concourse to mimic B & C. Southwest is pushing more to hub/spoke model. Breeze continues to expand.

I do not live there anymore so I don’t use it much but the new airport feels Busch League. I liked the old one better.

If they got to 60+ gates they’d have enough time to tear down the old terminal to add a parallel runway to 11/29.
But plenty of 60 gate airports operate with 2 runways

LGA is a hub with 72 gates and 2 runways. It works for them, albeit not very well sometimes.
There may be space to add a new south runway at MSY but it would be tight. They’d need to move a railroad track probably.

You could deport every illegal Honduran in New Orleans in under 6 months on the existing four daily departures from MSY to Tegus or San Pedro. It would take 611 flights. At four departures a day, you could do it PDQ.
