It was extremely cheap food and lots of it for college kids with little money. The reopening of it brings back good memories for those same college kids. It’s not a cult like following and it’s not that hard to understand.

Going today for lunch at the newly remodeled Essen one. Can’t. Wait.

Grew up in what is about to be St George.
Gattis was THE pizza place at the time because Little Caesars didn’t exist or was only at Sharp and Florida, Papa John’s didn’t exist yet, Dominoes was shite, and Pizza Hut was decidedly inconvenient because the only dine in one close to there was on Perkins near College and had shite parking.
I still love it and my kids love it but my wife hates it. She’ll relent with their new renovations because she knows I would rather hang myself than take the kids back to Chuck E Cheese or Main Event.

On a similar but unrelated note, this reminds me of the first time a guy from work said we had to try the "awesome" pizza that is Johnnys. I thought it was some local haunt but no it was just a Mr. Gattis.

I get it. My post was more of a dig for a friend with whom I have a long standing debate about how good Gatti's actually was. The cheap part for a student is understandable, but I just don't think it's good pizza compared to Mellow Mushroom, for example, or many other fanchises.

I remember the Zip Lock bags everyone would bring for their take home pizza at Mr. Gatti's

For a chain pizzeria, it isn’t bad for the price.
There are better pizzas but it isn’t like people are raving about it like it is Fleur De Lis, which I find horribly overrated to begin with.

Ghatti’s was $5.15 with tax. When they went up to $5.75, my roommate wanted to revolt.
When they took away the student discount (2004ish), I wrote a letter to The Reveille as a joke that lambasted Gattis for blaring the fight song while taking away the very gimmick that got students to fill their dining. That turned into a extended debate about it in the letters to the editor section.

Had my first (legal) beer at the Mr. Gatti's on Florida Blvd. on my 18th birthday, 1984.

Pretty sure Newks is closed down also. I agree, though. Wasn't very good.
Fast casual places like Panera or Zoe's kitchen print money. Surprised a more successful place like that hasn't scooped up the building.
