I grew up in the dc area

crossing from VA to MD everyday for a commute is a total nightmare

ETA: I don't know where you lived in the area. If you're willing to put up with a commute there are places around DC that are more affordable. You just have to compromise.

That defeats the purpose of DC. I went there as a single man living in Clarendon/Courthouse.

I'm now a married man and if we wanted to continue to live in that area, it's $$$$.

Commuting a hour each way is like jerking off in the wind. It seems fun and worth it. Until reality sets in there's a mess to deal with.

Then why did you tell him to live in Montgomery county (Bethesda/Gaithersburg/Rockville) area and make his commute 3+ hours daily. Look on a map where Suitland is, since you don’t know where it is

It pretty much defeats the purpose of living in any major city in the US that's worth living in. Newsflash. Living in the big city is expensive. If you want to have your cake and eat it to you have to pay the price of admission. Or do what you did and leave.

The traffic on the beltway is the same either way during rush hour.

If hes willing to deal with the non stop gridlock crossing back in VA to live in Alexandra or Arlington, might as well find something a little bit more affordable a bit father away. He has BAH so affordable housing and space is at a premium.

I get it man.... we paid 3200$ a month for our 2 BR apt... we wanted to stay in DC but daycare was wanting 1500$ a month for one child, we moved to Williamsburg, va and eventually paid 1500 for 2 children after we had our second. We moved back to Louisiana because my mom got sick... same salary, now pay about 1100$ for one in private school and One in daycare. It’s hard to make it up there unless you live in the way out burbs, especially with kids

Children are headed my way and I knew I couldn't afford the daycare prices without some cutbacks.

My coworker flew his Georgian MIL in from Europe to live with them for 6 months. All she did was babysit.

Spoken like one of those assholes who bought real estate in the early 90s when it was dirt cheap or carpet bagged during the recession.

Suitland is garbage. Working at ONI? You can live in DC even in the Adams Morgan/14th St/Shaw area and make it to Suitland in about 30-40 minutes in the morning. Coming home is an hour plus. It would be worth it though.

Fairfax and Loudoun county was cheap maybe back in the 80s.

And I'm not bashing you. I know it's an expensive place to live but it's also a great place for a career. It just isn't alone in that.

It’s still fun as shite, but it is for the younger crowd for the most part Jack Rose is legit though. U St is the main hub now with 801, Brixton, El Rey, Takoda etc.

I lived in Arlington right outside of the Courthouse area for 4 years and in Old Town Alexandria for 2. Would recommend either and both should be easy to get to your PG county job from.

I I live in the Crystal City/Pentagon City area and love it. For you, it might just fit the bill. You would be 1 or 2 stops on the yellow line to L'Enfant and switch over to the green line to get out to Suitland. If you wanted to go down to Old Town, it is just 2 or 3 stops to the King Street Station. At most, 20 minutes to the city center, plus it is quieter than living in DC proper.

You would be looking at $1500 for a studio and $2000-$2500 for a one-bedroom in the area, but it is definitly cheaper than Dupont Circle or the Navy Yards. You might be exempt due to your active duty status, but you have to pay property taxes on your personal automobile in Arlington County, so take that in mind when trying to decide whether or not to bring a car (we also have zipcar and car2go here).

You're welcome, you're welcome.

If you don't know that $1400 tax bill is coming, it can hit you in the stomach like it did me my first year.

It's even worse if you have a "luxury" car. At least it is in Fairfax County.
