I don't want it to be too long of a drive. I love to be early for work but also don't want to have to wake up too early to achieve this. That's why I either want to live just across the Potomac or in an area in Maryland where there isn't a high crime rate.
Single? Married? Kids?
I'd shy away from crossing the Potomac on 495. The traffic there has always been terrible

What can you afford?
A family member rents out rooms illegally and has a line of very nice professional govt workers who can afford his rents but can't afford apartment prices.

True but not relevant to a single guy. And I love the suggestions that he live in Bethesda or Reston. That would truly be commuting hell.
Suitland is less ghetto than it used to be. You could try a place near the MGM. I have no experience living there (I'm in North Arlington) but I understand it's okay.
As with everything else, it's all about location. If you're willing to be further south (and therefore away from all the single scene) you could probably save a good bit.

I lived in Chevy Chase MD for about a year and loved the area. Expensive though.....

I don't know what BAH is in D.C. but I'm told it's around the same as what we're given here in Hawaii. So perhaps $2,000 a month?
You’ll spend all of that and then some for a 1 br apartment in Arlington or Alexandria

We moved from DC in October. It has been the hardest decision and transition. I lived there for 4 years and we really really enjoyed it.
We also didn't have shite when we left there because of how expensive everything is to live.
I crunched the math and the average home price was $750,000 in Arlington. A solid home will run you 1.2M likely that has a little bit of yard.
I could not for the life of me understand how these people afforded paying these mortgages. Honestly, how does someone even consider $3,500.00 mortgage affordable?
It's the norm there though.

I lived in Clarendon area for a year and it was one of the best years I’ve ever lived. Right on the orange line and lots to do around there. I lived in Navy Yard by Nationals stadium at the Axiom, and it was hard to beat during baseball season. Very close to the metro and Capitol Hill. Area has developed quite a bit since I left in 2013.
I say if your going to live up there, live somewhere in the heart of things so that on the weekends you’re not out in surburbia. DC is a truly amazing place for a single person to live. Better start working on your tinder/bumble game.

Nor does the guy that suggested Reston.

Honestly, if you live here long enough and advance yourself it isn't a big deal.

My gut tells me Alexandria is probably the best place to settle but was wondering if any of you OT baws have any better ideas.
Can you afford a Helicopter for traveling and commuting around the area?
If not. Just shoot yourself now.

I don't even know what this means. The wife and I after student loans to maintain same standard of living as we have in St. Louis, according to every calculator out there. We have to make....
$410,587.00
That's not happening, bub. Even as expensive as DC is it's hard to find a $200K a year job if you're not a lawyer or doctor.

A house priced under $700k sells in the area in a day if it shows well and is priced right. There are lots of people affording that $3500 mortgage.

You live in DC, both of you have student loans, and you aren't doctors or lawyers? Wtf went wrong?

My wife works in cardiac surgery. I work in finance/legal. We both have advanced degrees.
Nothing went wrong. Just people have the wrong expectations. You can make $140K a year and be regulated to a condo. Last year we made $300K combined and it still wasn't shite for the area.
The taxes, the fees, the lifestyle, etc. It just all compounds living up there. It's hard to describe unless you've lived it.
We pay like 2K combined for student loans.

And the real estate agent I knew told me those people are "house poor" for the most part.

My brother has lived up there for like 8 years now.

We opted out. Make a lot more money at end of day. We took those same salaries to a new city (little bit of decrease overall).
DC though was fun. To have a family and build a life up there is in ordinarily expensive. We knew we could have a better standard of living away from the city.

Some are, most aren't. Just like everywhere else in the country.
ETA: I don't know where you lived in the area. If you're willing to put up with a commute there are places around DC that are more affordable. You just have to compromise.

I get it man.... we paid 3200$ a month for our 2 BR apt... we wanted to stay in DC but daycare was wanting 1500$ a month for one child, we moved to Williamsburg, va and eventually paid 1500 for 2 children after we had our second. We moved back to Louisiana because my mom got sick... same salary, now pay about 1100$ for one in private school and One in daycare. It’s hard to make it up there unless you live in the way out burbs, especially with kids
