Your dogs stay with the hosts in their home. They treat your dogs like their own. I have used two different hosts in my area, Ms. Pam and Ms. Janet, and they were awesome with my toy poodle (diabetic and is given 2 insulin injections a day)

See nothing wrong with your scenario, but then I treat my dogs like dogs, not family. A few days inside the house most of the time will neither kill them nor hurt their psyche, and they will still be super excited to see you walk through the door.

I say go for it! I moved to BR less than 2 months ago and have two dogs. MY neighbors asked me in less than a month, after us hanging out a few times, to watch theirs when out for work. Nothing wrong with it if it is a fellow dog lover.
I absolutely hate boarding my dog in a new town until I can get a reference from my vet or groomer, or use said groomer a few times. I think you're in the clear. I also think the asking for a reference idea was a good one, as well, though.

Decided to board them in a higher priced facility. They receive play time with other dogs. There's an interview process and no aggressive breeds allowed. Video monitor as well. I just moved to this area 3 months ago. Thanks for the input
