Motor Trend: Ford Finally Adds Basic Truck Conveniences Chevy's Had For Years

For all the "every truck looks like a Tundra" crowd....
The real problem is that trucks have gotten so unnecessarily tall in the past few years that they require these features now. A 6' tall driver can't reach into most of the bed of their 3/4 ton truck anymore without climbing onto the wheel.

Accessing a pickup's bed never used to be an issue. In decades past, trucks were lower to the ground and their bedsides weren't as tall. Then, in the late 1990s, trucks started getting physically larger and sitting higher off the ground. Their beds were made much deeper. What once was an easy reach into the box was now more of a chore. To aid owners in this new chore, manufacturers needed to come up with new and creative ways to help customers easily access their cargo. Enter the next step, literally, beyond ye olde stepside bed.
The bumper steps were first to arrive, the first iteration of which was offered by Chevrolet on the 2002-2006 Avalanche. A larger, second-generation, bumper step was added to all of GM's pickup offerings beginning in 2014. Ford chose a different route, and in 2009 introduced the tailgate step on the refreshed F-150. The fold-out step was revolutionary, nesting inside the tailgate when not in use. And then there is the MultiPro tailgate that GMC introduced in 2019, which flips and folds to become, among other things, an easy pathway into the pickup's bed. Then, in 2020 Chevy introduced an all-new Silverado HD, which now included not only larger bumper steps but also bedside steps located forward of the rear wheel opening.
This evolution of bed access now continues with the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty, which adds a series of steps carved out of its bedsides and rear bumper. Though the Super Duty was announced late last year, we've now gotten our best look yet at the Blue Oval's implementation of not only rear bumper corner steps, but also those novel bedside steps, as well.
quote:
The Super Duty's new steps are very similar to those offered on Chevrolet's Silverado HD (which has had the bedside steps since 2020). And though GM hasn't yet stated what the company thinks about Ford's newest additions, as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

WTF Motortrend? There's been a f*&king step in the rear bumper since trucks were first made .....
Then Ford made the fancy tailgate step thing.

You’re either too laughably short to get up in your compensation or too poor to buy running boards.
That or car manufacturers are making trucks way too big.

One feature Ford has over GM - they didn’t ask the government to save their arse.

My F150 had the bed step. At first I thought it was hokey, then I used it all the time. What a great feature. I miss that on my Tundra. Toyota needs some kind of bed help. The rest all have something.

GM didn't have rear seat AC vents until 2019
Not to mention they've had the sissy step and bar since before GM had those steps.
ETA: And Ford was first with a flat floor in the cab, that was game changer for passenger comfort and cargo space on the inside.

So Ford Didn't take a $6B government loan in 2009? Or your chosen news service didn't tell you?

Ford doesn't innovate. They just copy - and usually fail with the whole quality control thing.
That's why GM sells more pickup trucks and full sized SUVs than Ford.

I thought everyone just used the back tires?

That's thoughtful to add a step to get more visibility when flagging down the tow truck.

Hopefully nobody copies all of the catastrophic engine fires and reliability problems Ford has been having.

Ford F-250 needs a step ladder, truck is the size of a 79 Mack, and that’s pre cheesedick lift kit and crawfish pot wheels.

Ford fanboys can be confident in knowing that no competitor can match the number of recalls that their trucks have standard from the factory.

Bumper step is the easiest, most logical solution. No fussy old man/sissy steps, and you can use it if the tailgate is down. In all seriousness, Ford did the right thing here. GM had a better solution and it isn't copyrighted.
I kind of wish Toyota would copy it with the Tundra. In this case the domestics have a better setup.

The jealousy from some of you people. Your life must be miserable. Sorry you can’t afford a F150.

That's called a Mother-in-Law step. Or at least that is what I told my mother-in-law it was called.

Okay I've never heard of your wheel description before, but now I can't unsee it.

I don’t drive a F150, but this is just a stupid comment. Ford was the first to bring innovation to the Tailgate space, many years ago with the “man step” seen above. Then GM came behind with the steps on both sides of bumper, which was a good solution too. Then GM came out with the over complicated “multi-pro tailgate” thing. I laugh every time I see someone try to use that thing.
But but, you can put a laptop on it
!!!!! Wow GM
