Yeah but it would be weird and oddly impressive if my 8 month old daughter got my wife a gift for mother’s day. Since, you know, my wife is her mom.

Man, you know her better than anyone. Hopefully.

I am in the exact same situation.
I am getting her a tshirt that says "Resting Brunch Face" because she loves brunch.

Or....she could be already so filled with joy at finally being a mother....she isn’t gonna really care what she gets for Mother’s Day
Its a trap!

Very similar situation.
I got this gift for my daughter though on her first birthday. Very simple and very inexpensive but the thought behind it is cool in my opinion. I got my daughter (or in this case your wife) a journal. What we have done is start a tradition that the day before my daughters birthday we write her a letter from both of us. At a moment in time (I picked my daughters wedding day whenever that would be) we present the journal as a gift.
Maybe get one and a camera so that she can include photos if you are trying to show you spent a lot.

Get a really nice necklace and locket. Better yet, get a matching set for her and your daughter.

Pearls. Good ones. Necklace or bracelet

Golf? I must have missed where the OP said he was 70 years old.

Relax dude. Fathers Day is June 17th
My wife knows I don’t want anything special for Father’s Day. Every year we just carry on like it’s a normal day. Which means I usually play golf

Congrats but don’t go overboard. You’ll set too high of a bar for future Mothers Days.
Nonsense. This eases her into her eventual constant disappointment in you.

Did you win the chamber tournament yesterday?

Didn’t play. I’m in West Texas

Come on you know that excuse won't fly with most women

Whatever you decide, just make sure she can post it on Facebook/Instagram to show all the other wives what she got
That should be your benchmark. Don't worry if it makes your wife happy, it needs to make my wife jealous
