used to have a Ford Edge when it first came out. It wasn’t girly but the newer ones have a softer look

The new ones are light years better looking than the 1st gen. And with the Ecoboost and AWD, they're pretty quick too.

We have a '14 CX5 grand touring with the 2.5l. It has been an excellent vehicle in the 55k miles we've put on it. Mid 20s gas milage in town. Upper 20s peaking into the low 30s in pure interstate driving. It's the wife's primary driver but I wouldn't hesitate to drive it. Looks sharp in black with the 19s. But the 19s suck when it comes time to buy tires. The stock tires are Z rated any many places won't put anything but z rated on it which puts it into low milage expensive sport tires normally used on BMWs. Local Walmart let me sign s waiver and put non z rated Pirellis on them.

I like what they did with the new RAV4. Doesn’t look like a minivan any more. I would get one if that were my budget.

None of those are SUVs. They are all front drive crossovers with no expectation of off road capability and very little towing.

That being said, between those I'd choose the Mazda CX-5. It handles very well, looks good, and has a great interior. I'd also consider the GMC Terrain or Chevy Equinox now that they have a diesel engine that can (in theory) tow and see 40+MPG. They are a little bigger than the CX-5. The Ford Escape is not bad either, but it's a little bit of an older design.

The CR-V is an excellent vehicle as well, but no engine upgrades and it includes a CVT, which I hate.

My wife has the CX-5 Grand Touring and I love driving it.

Its very nice on the inside too, but I doubt you'll get a Grand Touring in the new body style for under 20k.

Want something a few years old, probably ‘15-‘18. I’m thinking Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mazda CX-5, something like that. Trying to stay under 20k. Suggestions?

I think the Mazda would be the best choice. It certainly the most driver friendly vehicle that you listed in terms of driving enjoyment. If that's important to you. They are also full of good standard features.

I was going to say that interior isn’t that nice, but for the purchase price it actually is.

It’s this macho-think about cars that does an outstanding job of keeping poors poor. It is amazing how many people’s self worth hinges on the car they drive. Just buy a Toyota or a Honda that works and move on.

My neighbor has one of these. His is light blue. It's mostly in the garage except on sunny days. I've always wanted one as a second vehicle.

Mazda CX-5 maybe least mom-like of the ones you specifically mentioned.

I really want to hate the CX-5. But keep seeing stuff like this.

Not all Jeeps are the same. My Jeep Patriot is a pile of crap, but the engine is solid. Will drive till the wheels fall off.

To the OP: RAV4 sounds like your best best since you are already familiar with Toyota. I know several people who have them and love them.

I bet the CX-5 has a 118mph speed limiter like my Mazda3. You don't need Z-rated tires for that.
