You arent going to build up your abdominals from running.
I am living proof of that.

Looking for machine that actually works and not a gimmick.
Do your legs work? Buy some running shoes.

I think, what is being implied, is that if you run and only run, you get very developed in your lower body (as expected).
The "runners" I know have sticks for legs.
If you want to lose the pot belly, track your food intake and eat a deficit.

I got on an elliptical for the first time yesterday. Awkward as hell for me to use and almost immediate muscle burn in my legs. So that seemed legit.
If you have the cash, get a free range motion elliptical. I precor had the patent.

It's an elliptical that doesn't force into a set stride. You can run with your natural motion, use it like a stair machine, or take giant gazelle strides, without any impact. Best machine I've ever used. But I figure it's not very cheap.

Even at 54, I have excellent stamina. I can easily do a 10K in under an hour (not great, but steady) and can come home and boil crawfish and drink beer all afternoon.
I can stay at a track all day, if I want, even in the summer. Working, fishing, etc are a lot more fun when you are fit.
Physically, I feel like I can do what I did in my 30s and I have running (and my BILs) to thank for that.
Not a chiseled physique by any stretch, though.
You younger guys are lucky in that you are finding this out earlier.

Yeah, they are awesome, at 15k.
I think if you already have a pool, you can get the motor installed (if your pool is set up right) and it's only like 8k.
As far as anyone mentioning a stationary bike, like I said earlier, just get a real bike and a trainer. I can hook my bikes up to my trainer, get different levels of resistance, hook a $40 dollar speed sensor up, use a program that's $12 a month called trainerroad, and basically get all the data, workouts, etc. that you can get from a gym membership and a spin class. If you don't want to pay $12 a month, you can just follow the many free youtube videos and just go off of perceived effort (like you would in a spin class anyway). All that and you can still have a bike to go ride outside whenever you want. All can be had for the price of a decent stationary bike (as long as you don't get a really expensive bike)
