Not a hydrologist here but wouldnt more water diverted to the Atchafalaya just eventually lead to a river switch anyways?

Less flow to the Mississippi would allow it to drop more sediment in the stretch from the diversion to the Gulf, leading to a need for even more water to be diverted.

The Atchafalaya is obviously not setup at the moment to be the major trade route that the lower Mississippi is. So it's either invest tremendous funds and manpower in truly dredging the Mississipi or invest in modernizing the Atchafalaya route and work towards desalinization on a massive scale.

This topic is way over my head as far as it goes to a solution. So many different aspects to it all is just mind boggling.

What law would this be?

It takes an act of congress to adjust the flows. Of the total flow 30% goes down the Atchafalaya and 70 goes down the Mississippi River.

Note: This is not the same as sending 30% of the Mississippi River water down the Atchafalaya.

They do not have authority to make decisions on how much to send where.

These statements are confusing and seem to contradict each other.

For every three gallons that go down the Atchafalaya 7 go down the Mississippi.

Some of the water in the Atchafalaya comes from the Red River. So it is 30% of the total of the two rivers. Not 30% of the flow of the Mississippi River.

Someone correct me if I am wrong! It is rare but is possible.

Bump for 2nd delay to June 9th. ACE doesn't want to send more water into the flood way than necessary and the forecast crest has been pushed back again.

By Kevin Foster | June 3, 2019 at 2:18 PM CDT - Updated June 3 at 2:30 PM
MORGANZA, La. (WAFB) - The opening of the Morganza Control Structure has been postponed again until June 9.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the delay is because forecasts indicate river elevations could overtop the control structure.

The Mississippi River is predicted to reach 60 feet at the structure on June 12, 2019 instead of on June 9, 2019, which was in the previous forecast.

The Army Corps of Engineers only intends to operate the structure when needed as to not put additional water into the Atchafalaya Basin.

wafb

so wait to see if it over tops or not? genius i say......

Once they open that thing they cant close it until the river goes down and it wrecks a bunch of shite when it is open.

It's a big deal. Opening the bonnet carre kills some oysters.

From the calculations I've been doing, it has played a factor (Arkansas Dardanelle-breach as well)
