They could dam the river, but what are the going to do about the sediment levels that would fall out over that 6-9 month stretch?

The "old" Mississippi river bottom wouldn't be recognizable. The amount of dredging needed would be astronomical.

However, I don't doubt the notion that we'd give it our best shot.

Like he mentioned, if a break ever occurred at ORCS, the percentage of flow would jump up very rapidly down the Atchafalaya, think 40-50% instead of the current 30%.

Thats not what he said at all. He said that it is currently 40% of the mississippi and verbatim "It looks lie the entire Mississippi would go into the Atchafalaya"

From a 5,000 foot view the whole situation is a clusterfrick. The MS River is essentially a fire hose that waves back and forth uncontrollably (on a centennial time scale). To think we can set up our whole civilization right smack dab in the middle of its area of swing and expect to stay there without getting hit by it is pretty crazy. And over time the hose gets harder to hold in place even bough we’re trying.

The Atch WANTS 40% of it at current. It gets 30% as set by the USACE. EVENTUALLY the Atch wants all of it; the 40% would be instantaneous following a break. The MS River would just clog up instantaneously.

Look up the MS river work done by Fisk

yeah just dam up the 3rd largest river in the world.

How do you think they made ORCS in the first place? The Mississippi River won’t cut a new channel in a few months of high water. The river would settle back to normal or even low water levels in the fall and they’d rebuild the structure.

Rebuild in 4 or 5 months? I don't think so.

Seems like they could just stack enough debris where ORCS was and force the water back down current channel once flood conditions are over. If there were to be a failure.

30 barges filled with riprap when the river is at its lowest could put it back on course. Of course the damage would have been done and would take years to fix down stream on both sides

They'd do something. People here act like we'd throw up our hands and say frick it. Mostly because they want it to happen so badly. The same people are the ones cheering for the hurricane to make landfall in Louisiana in hurricane track in game threads.

I just think its foolish to assume that 1)we can control the river indefinitely and 2)economically.

Sure you can build another control structure thats bigger and bigger, but what happens to the levees in between? Are you going to reinforce those to match the capacity of the new ORCS? Who is going to pay for that?

Rivers here in Kansas are super swollen. I’m not sure if the Arkansas feeds into the Mississippi but if it does you baws have a lot coming your way yet.

ETA: it looks like it does

in the long run the Atchafalaya River will become the principal distributary of the Mississippi River and that the current main-stem will become an estuary of the Gulf of Mexico. Just when this will occur cannot be predicted: it could happen next year, during the next decade, or sometime in the next thirty or forty years. But the final outcome is simply a matter of time and it is only prudent to prepare for it.

They've started the process of sinking the barge in Bayou Chene. Not sure how much it helps what they've already got, but it should keep new water out.

That is a fantastic analogy.

The physics of the matter are waiting, and they've got all day.

I hope such a thing never happens to the good folks of Louisiana (and I'm dead serious about that, and I'll be the first son of a bitch to load up and head that way and help), but when it does...

I've got some land for sale in Missisippi.

She will move one of these days and there's not a damned thing we can do about it when the actions and reactions are under way except to watch in wonder and horror.

They need to just go ahead and reroute roads and pipelines now..I 10 will be cut without a doubt and east west traffic on the corridor will be a total cluster
