Ardagh Glass made the announcement last month. KNOE 8 News just learned the reason behind the layoffs. The company says crews need to drain one of its two furnaces, shutting down a part of the plant. Mayor Sybil Foster hopes the people who are out of a job don't move away from the area.

"The layoff would be six months," Foster said. "Possibly even an excess of six months, but six months seemed to be the shortest amount of time they would lay them off." The Mayor says the plant is one of the town's major sources of employment. She says the layoffs could create a negative impact on the community. "It's going to be a toll on Simsboro because a lot of people stay here," said Police Chief Jerry Davis.

That’s gonna suck for this area. There’s just not a lot of job opportunities in N.La to absorb something like this. And most people can’t survive a 6 month layoff without losing a lot financially.

They won’t be out of work. Just not working at that plant.

People don't respect glass anymore. It's all plastics and plexiglass (which any old timer will tell you is bullshite). People are happy with chemicals leaching into their bloodstream so their mayonnaise jar can be little lighter and not break when they drop it.

Ok. But there aren’t many here in the present though. That’s the problem. And the economy is contracting so there are fewer opportunities out there.

There is a startup sawmill going on down the road, but a lot of those positions have been filled I believe.

It’s just gonna be painful for the workers and the area.

I'm just curious why it takes 6 months to drain a furnace? I'm assuming its enormous, that just seems like a crazy amount of time to have 1/2 of your plant shut down?

I don’t know. This generation of teams is very anti-plastics. The number of glass water bottles and food storage containers at my son’s high school is crazy. And it’s not environment driven. They avoid plastics touching anything they consume.

Some enterprising baw needs to make aftermarket glass headlight lenses and do away with these yellowing plastic trash ones we have to accept currently.

My grandfather and dad both retired from Libbey. And my brother and I both worked there during the summer in college.

I spend almost every weekend during hunting season in Simsboro and didn't even know they had a glass plant there, much less that it employed 200 people. That's a big hit to a town of less than 1000 people. But I'm guessing the majority lived in Ruston.

That’s the biggest bullshite I have ever heard. A furnace does not take more than a few days to clean properly

There is more to this story than they are telling the public

The glass plant is on I-20 at the industrial exit. You may not have known it was a glass plant but if you’ve spent any time at all in Simsboro you know where it is and have passed it 100 times.
