Hydrogen production company Monarch Energy this morning announced it is considering Ascension Parish as the location for a new $426 million facility.

Monarch specializes in decarbonizing the hydrogen production process. The company estimates the proposed facility would employ a carbon-free process to manufacture 120,000 kilograms of hydrogen per day to be sold as a “green” feedstock for a wide range of industrial and chemical processes, according to Louisiana Economic Development.

The project adds to a growing list of “green” energy plants going up in the region, including Air Product’s $4.5 billion Blue Hydrogen Clean Energy project, also in Ascension Parish, and Grön Fuels $9.5 billion biofuel plant in West Baton Rouge Parish.

If the project moves forward as outlined, Monarch Energy expects to create 44 new jobs with an average annual salary of more than $63,000, according to LED.

so, using hydrocarbon based fueled electricity to remove the carbon from a hydrocarbon (natural gas) to make a much less energy dense fuel (hydrogen)

gotcha, using hydrocarbons to make a far less efficient fuel

Sorry for different subject question, but what’s the latest on the Shell Convent renewable fuels plant boondoggle?

I thought for sure it was ready to break ground, but haven’t heard anything in several months on that

By far the funniest part of the hydrogen future.

I guess the byproducts can be a bit cleaner is all.

The laws of thermodynamics and chemistry were created by white men. We must stop observing those laws to break down the patriarchy and disassemble meritocracy.

What part of the process makes any sense to you? If the government wasn’t subsidizing this, would it even be a thing?

At some point it has become a profitable endeavor that’s not reliant on the government.

Doesn’t matter what you label it. The bucket brigade will fight it and make it as miserable of a process as possible for the air permit to get approved.

Who are they going to supply? With no pipeline network, I don't see how this works out

Rumor is that a lot of the planned projects for the restart got slashed in their new directive from the CEO of "sustainability but only if its profitable"
