Video games are where you are supposed to play games that are impossible in real life.
Mario Bross.- Tiny plumbers that eat mushrooms to grow and travel through sewers to fight man eating plants, turtles, etc..
GTA- Steal cars, kill prostitutes, wreak havoc on a city with no repercussions.
MLB The Show 24- Women play baseball competitevely against men.
These are all just things that allow us to escape reality.

The target audience of that franchise didn't ask for it. 100%. They wasted time on a feature to virtue signal that could have been spent on other improvements they were asking for.

I don’t understand all these brands that primary appeal to males now catering to a female audience that either doesn’t exist or is an infinitesimally small number. It never works. Star Wars and Marvel are prime examples of the folly of trying to shoehorn female interest into brands geared towards males.

I disagree with these moves as well most of the time but they aren't hard to understand. We live in an economic system that demands infinite growth. MLB the Show has probably maintained around the same amount of players the past few years. This is an attempt to appeal to the female market because they feel like they have maxed out their growth potential in the male demographic.
Last year they changed their entire online model to separate "seasons". It must not have resulted in much economic growth so now they are gonna try to appeal to a new playerbase.
Also they don't need 5 million women to buy this game the way video games full of micro transactions work. They just need 1,000 "whales"

I get what you’re saying. A big part of my job as a product manager is ensuring YoY growth. But, when you have example after of example of this type of move not resulting in growth and in fact resulting precipitous losses, it’s insane to follow this strategy.

Yeah, they just now maxed out their male market, 24 iterations into their franchise.
It's entirely coincidental that this addition coincides with all the gendered political bullshite plaguing our society today.

They were riding on micro transactions and diamond dynasty for almost the past decade. They have probably finally topped out on the profit that mode brings in.
Last year they added the negro leagues. It's safe to say they're fresh out of gimmicks to add, and are now trying to appeal to new audiences to rope in a few more whales that will drop $1,000 on top of paying $80 for the game to add Shohei Ohtani or Aaron Judge to their team.

The problem with this business model is that for every one whale they gain, they’ll lose at least two males, probably more. Again, we have multiple examples of this strategy being a road to failure. There is literally zero legitimate business reasons to make this move. It’s purely ideologically driven.

Why? They aren't removing anything that has been in the game the past 10 years? You will be able to make a team with 0 females online or you can still play a regular mlb season with real rosters and males only.
The only thing they are adding is the ability to make your player a female if you want. It's just a new character model, and was probably very cheap to implement (like how you could already customize your characters build).
They aren't making shohei Ohtani a chick. They are saying if when u create ur own character Joe Blow to add to the game, you can make them a female, Jolene Blow

Why? Because it’s a proven business reality that when a brand that appeals to primarily males tries to cater to females, this is a turnoff to many males. This is especially true in the entertainment world. Again, I cite huge male driven brands like Star Wars and Marvel as examples of this. It simply does not work. That’s just reality. Doesn’t matter if you like it or not. It’s still reality.

I can see that being the case in movies, not so much in video games. Fortnite has male and female characters, they seem to be doing fine.
A lot of male gamers make female characters, just so they are staring at a virtual female arse instead of a male one. Look at the success of the tomb raider games, and those games started when graphics were shite.

If you think MLB is gonna make any gameplay changes at all based off adding females your expectations are a lot higher than mine. They haven't touched Road to the Show in years and that's one of their main modes. They will shove females in the game and the gameplay will remain exactly the same.
