Look, I'm 1000% tired of all the racial bullshite in this country, but of course I believe this, because that's exactly how AI is supposed to work.

Why are modern commercials so annoying? You know, the ones that will depict a family with a black mom, a gay disabled white dad, and two children who are Indian and Asian? And that Asian kid is trans? It's annoying because it doesn't reflect reality, it's an obvious fantasy knowing that the majority of families in this country are plain old white people. There's a very good argument to be made that marketing should reflect our reality.

Now apply this to the new AI models. They aren't intelligent, they don't think for themselves, they just take input data and match patterns and generate output. They're just big pattern-matching software.

Consider that LinkedIn is a professional network used by people in the Western world. The majority of the Western world is white. Therefore, the majority of LinkedIn photos of females the AI will be using as an input will be white women. The computer doesn't know anything about race. It's a computer. It's just applying patterns. So it's no surprise at all if you ask AI to "Give the girl from the original photo a professional linkedin profile photo" it's going to give her features that look white.

It's not the AI model that's "biased", it's the input data that's "biased" towards whites, because most women on LinkedIn are white. It doesn't understand what features in the photos are "racial" and which are "professional", it's a dumb computer with no racial sensitivity training.

Which is exactly what the founder says in reply:
quote:

Suhail Doshi, the founder of Playground AI, responded to Wang's post: "The models aren't instructable like that so it'll pick any generic thing based on the prompt. Unfortunately, they're not smart enough."

If I asked an AI model to "make me look like an NBA player" I'm not going to be shocked if I look blacker because the majority of NBA players are black dudes.
If I asked an AI model to "make me look like a guy in a mosque" I'm not going to be shocked if I look browner because the majority of Muslims are brown.
So yeah, I'm not shocked that it made her look more white, because the majority of women on LinkedIn are white.

AI is more driven by the prompts, and I’m sure she toyed with the prompts to get her desired affect.

It's interesting the many changes it made.

-Enlarge eyes slightly
-Made eyes blue
-Made skin tone caucasian
-Dropped the nose tip slightly
-Almost completely removed the dimples
-Neatened up her eyebrows
-Changed her smirk to more of a smile
-Gave her bed-head

When I go to PlaygroundAI and type in her exact prompt, I get a white girl:

Because most females in the data sets are white females. The AI is based and is reflecting reality.
