Do cops actually wonder why people are starting to turn on them?

What a POS

She doesn't say they didn't. She says she doesn't recall and "can't access are boost records anymore". Jackson PD did frick up though. But they called her and she just never responded.

It’s plausible that they called her and left a message. She apparently has beef with the PD so if they just said “Hello, this is so-n-so form the Jackson police, please call.” In her mind her son wasn’t really missing at the time, she prob had no idea what they wanted so she may have just ignored it.

They still should should have sent a car to her house to notify her though.

From the OPs title I thought they had struck him and killed him and then buried him in the woods to hide it

Seems like you should try a little harder to notify family. Maybe call the mom again or knock on her door.

For real. Should have just sent a text.

They would need a subpoena or her permission.

Their own phone records should at least show the outgoing call, no? Probably wouldn’t show record of the voicemail other than maybe being able to interpret something from the call length, though.

Regardless you’d like to think there would be more than one phone call before they dropped him in a pauper’s grave.

The subject made me think at first that the below didn’t happen, and they just buried him after hitting him.
quote:

The officer who killed Dexter was not declared at fault for the fatal crash. Wade was reportedly walking across a six-lane highway when he was hit, and his death was ruled accidental. A toxicology report later showed that he had meth and PCP in his system. And while the investigator for the coroner’s office didn’t find an ID at the scene, he did find a bottle of prescription medication that he was able to use to identify Dexter. He was also able to find contact information for next of kin and claims he called Bettersen on March 8, but she says she doesn’t remember receiving the call.

NBCnews article has more info.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/bettersten-wade-dexter-jackson-mississippi-police-missing-rcna121697

The mom waited a little over a week to call police. By that time his name and mother’s contact number had already been sent over to the police, but the investigating office she spoke with spelled his name “Dester”. It seems like matching something besides name is not that difficult especially since he had a record and was in the system.

The coroner’s office had also matched finger prints before the mom called. They also followed up at least twice with the police that were supposed to be trying to contact next of kin.
quote:

Elliott confirmed Dexter’s identification on March 9, when the state crime lab said his fingerprints matched those it had on file for him, according to his notes. Elliott said in an interview that he passed what he’d found — a phone number and an address — to the Jackson Police Department’s accident investigation squad so they could notify Bettersten of Dexter’s death.

quote:

On March 15, the day after Bettersten reported Dexter missing, Elliott followed up with Jackson police for updates. “No kin has been located as of yet,” he wrote in his notes.

Elliott made another follow-up call on March 30, and was told there was nothing new.

What department the coroner gave the info to wasn’t the missing persons division, but missing persons department for Jackson police (especially first officer investigating disappearance) is either incompetent or original guy did it on purpose.

Black mayor, 5 of 7 council members are black, and a black police chief.

I can't wait to watch Jackson's communist mayor try to explain this one.
