The problem with the French military in the WW's wasn't the soldiers' bravery, it was the country's completely inept leadership.
And while they aren't French citizens, by definition, the foreign legion are some bad mofo's and do work in Africa/ME, and beyond we rarely here of in our news.

I had the same thought when I saw that info.
The Med is where I made patrols in the 60's. I was discharged in 69. A lost submarine is usually known throughout the submarine navy, but I don't remember that one.

People joke about them in WW2 but the Germans were not easy to beat, in what was basically a surprise attack. Or at least, the path taken by the Germans was pretty much a surprise.
And look back at their immediate past- in WW1, barely 20 years before, they had lost 1.7 million people out of a population of 41 million. Most of the dead were young men of prime age for working and fathering their own children, and their loss would hobble the nation for decades. By the end of the war, France's total population had declined by 7% and their economy was drowning in war debt. (Compare their losses to our own modern population- it would be like have 12 million war dead for the US, and ending the war with 21 million fewer people in our population than we started with.)
And 45 years before WWI, the French were...yeah, fighting a war against the Germans.
Think about it, in one lifetime, a French person could have easily witnessed 3 major wars against the Germans, including being beaten by the Germans in 2 of them.

There is a reason so many American soldiers got laid during the liberation of Paris.
Joking aside, I have never thought about it that way before. Really crazy to comprehend

They (Nazis) were also hyped up on crystal meth given to the soldiers in pill form which is how initially they were able to conquer Europe so fast. They kept moving and never slept and fought with insane strength.
It wasn’t until later in the war when the Brits and Americans started using certain pills to help their soldiers stay awake and alert.
There was a documentary on this last night on the history channel

Took long enough to get to the bottom of it.

This is exactly how my French ancestors came to the United States. They were soldiers in Rochambeau's French army.

Those French submariners are going to be 50 years older than they were when the sub sank!! Man, I can't wait until they get a load of the Digital Technology!

Cedric de Pierrepont, 33, and Alain Bertoncello, 28, killed in an operation to rescue 4 hostages, one an American, in Burkino Faso last May.

They came down the same fricking road they used in WWI.

I know the French get a lot of shite for surrendering in WWII six weeks after the Germans invaded. But I've at least got to give them their due. While they didn't stay in the fight very long, while they were in the fight, they put up a helluva fight. Look at these figures of what it cost the Germans to conquer France in 1940:
27,074 dead (including 1,129 aircrew)
111,034 wounded
18,384 missing
157,676 total casualties (That's 3,427 casualties daily. To put this in perspective, the Germans lost an average of 3,907 casualties per day on the Eastern Front during WWII.)
1,263 aircraft lost
795-822 tanks lost
And keep in mind that the Battle of France lasted only 46 days.
Honestly, the French were in the fight til the end of the war. They fought their own countrymen in North Africa etc while also fighting the Axis. There is a reason Germany was split into a French Zone after the war, it was a result of how well the Free French fought.
