This is complete and utter nonsense. You know that right?

If that’s the way it turns out it’s nothing more than politicians trying to distance themselves from their own responsibilities (shocker) by creating a bigger cluster than it already is.

The mayor is over the police department. Creating a position to act as a go between from the mayor to the chief is creating a fall guy everyone can point to anytime something goes wrong.

‘Not my fault “. Well, it’s not my fault”. ‘It’s the go between’ s fault”. ‘Yeah, you’re fired.”

It’s hard being a grown up.

The mayor isn't asking for this, the council is. Minneapolis is a weak mayor system, and the council holds significant authority. The mayor has said he doesn't want to defund or abolish. It's little different than the President and the Secretaries of the Army, Navy and Air Force, where you are not allowed to be an active militarymen, and there is no requirement to have served at all.

I didn’t say it was a great system. I even said it added a layer of bureaucracy.

I’m only saying it’s not abolishing last enforcement like people in this thread think. It essentially just renames the department and creates “civilian oversight.”

I have little doubt that lily white idealist, naive liberals would sign up in droves.

This is generally a bad idea. The people that usually take over these oversight committees are the typical batshit/corrupt community activists. It would essentially be like having Gravy oversee the police department.

Question is, how long before they walk into the office, throw their so-called badge on the table, and say, "frick this shite, I quit"?

Longer than you think. The mind virus is deeply embedded into their brains. It would take several dozen beatdowns before any sort of light would turn on.

I tend to agree. I think it’s a “good in theory, but doesn’t work that way in reality” type of thing.

In an ideal world, it would work great because you’d get someone passionate about it who wants to do good for the community. In reality, you get like you said the batshit crazy activist types who only see the world in extremes and probably end up on a power trip.

I think a better method would be similar to a grand jury. Randomly rotate a group of citizens through the “oversight committee.”

This will be comedic gold when they start arming convicted felons to "enforce public safety".

It's coming.

No it isn’t. I don’t understand the constant need to create ridiculous hypotheticals here.

Just you wait.

Registered Democrat here. These people are nutjobs. Really pushes us moderate people away from the party. Calling the cops when someone breaks into your home is privilege? GTFO.

Are you a trojan horse? Sayin' you're a registered dem, but really going to vote Republican?

You might want to reconsider your political stance, in light of the all the crap they've pulled so far.

Because most of the past few years were nothing but ridiculous hypotheticals not even ten years ago.

Hell 2020 is one big ridiculous hypothetical.

I think what they really mean is that nobody should own a home..the government should be the "master landlord" of all housing and you get to stay there as long as you follow their rules in lockstep.

Seems eerily similar* to what we now call "prison".

*Please note the typical leftest hypocritical irony is that "prison" is what they now also claim is systematically set against certain groups.

It is certainly strange to see folks even thinking about discussing the abolition of police. Minneapolis Police Department has been a corrupt and garbage department forever though. Something in that department needs to change. It isn't the officers (by and large), but the system itself.
