We are looking at getting one for our kids.

I know it’s a small car but bigger than the standard mini. But does the size end up being an issue over time?

The kids are car fans and the mini product is cool and can be had for relatively cheap ($13k-14k) with low usage. Safety ratings are high as well.

It’s cool, probably not as sporty as the smaller S Mini offerings.

My wife drives a turbocharged sonic hatchback. It's really peppy and fun to drive. Every thing I read about the car was positive so I bought it.

Unless you're trying to move furniture, the size of the Countryman S shouldn't be an issue.

I have a 2013 and my wife and I love it. Plenty of room and peppy with the turbo engine. Only negative is you get a lot of dummy lights. We have 82000 miles on ours right now, only replaced brakes and tires

As long as you realize that your kids have now gone from being “ your beloved children” to “ those extremely punchable- faced kids in that tranny-looking car” to every pickup truck driver that is late to the plant on the road.

Bought my daughter a Mini Cooper S for graduation. The back seat is virtually non-existent, but there's plenty of room in the front. She's 6' and the size has never been a problem for her and I don't have to worry about her hauling around a car load of people and something bad happening.

It's the most fun car to drive that I've ever driven, but beware, the maintenance costs for everything on these cars costs more.

An oil change is roughly $120 (but you only need one once a year) for example.

I don’t have kids but I learned in an old F150.
You sit high up, it’s big and safe.
Scratches won’t matter, they’re easy to repair, and you can find parts for it anywhere if you need.
For that 13-14k, you could get a nice one from the 2000s no problem.
Teach them to parallel park that sucker and they will be able to park anything.

Saw an accident a few months ago where a Ram pickup had rear-ended one of the 4-door minis at a red light. The front end of the Ram was in much worse shape than the rear end of that mini FWIW.

No offense to you because I don't know your specific situation but this has always been a curious thing to me.

Why do people buy their teenagers or first-time drivers expensive cars like that? Growing up, everybody I knew had dilapidated pieces of shite for $1,000-$3,000, sometimes $5,000 but that was considered rich. This was in the 90s. Prices on used vehicles hasn't changed that much.

It's your first car, you're going to destroy it and not take care of it. Why would you buy your kid an expensive vehicle for their first car?

You need to check out what Eric the Car guy says about Mini's.

Introducing the Mini Series

Basically says they are loaded with disposable parts and not worth the amount of work and mechanic costs.

Buy them a Toyota.
