Right now, it is incredibly overpriced. Anyone saying otherwise is just being silly.

Wonderful. My house in River RiDge, a Louisiana suburb, is 58 years old, 1,656 sqFt, and it was $256,000....... People are high as frick in this thread and dont realize how expensive housing is.
Move to LaPlace baw
I never said real estate wasn't expensive. I think some areas are in another bubble.

You're either being ignorant or dishonest about the modern cost of housing compared to the housing that the "different breed" had available to them.

True, but you don't have to pay 45% of your income unless you're living beyond your means

Absolutely. We shouldn't have intervened after 2008. We helped out a lot of investors and hurt a lot of potential homeowners

So you either up your price range, or legthen your commute. Either way, it's more expensive. You just either pay it on your mortgage or your gas/toll bill.
Not true.
Living in Las Colinas actually removes all toll costs minus the trips up north and put me within 3 miles of work.

Not a strictly millennial thing like most of you in this thread are trying to say though
quote:
While Baby Boomers paid just 36% of their income toward rent while in their 20s, Gen Xers paid 41% and Millennials now pay 45% of their monthly income toward rent.
I wonder what has also grown in the years between these generations. Maybe something that had outpaced inflation?

You wouldn't live in the average 1970 house even with modern appliances.

I'd be paying more than my rent and at best equal to it for a house right now. This isn't some nice house. This is a house that would need a ton of work, is very old, and is not in the city. The same type of house you are talking about the "different generation" having. Again, I'm just going to assume you haven't looked at the housing market recently.

So again, If houses are incredibly overpriced right now, why is it smarter for a millennial to buy a house?

Ive never said it is.

Because you work in Las colinas
I'm talking about someone working in Dallas. Moving to Las colinas would lengthen my commute.

You're obsession with Los Colinas is odd. We're talking about most people and in general terms. You know that, but you want to interject some Los Calinas bullshite in here.

You're just complaining about millennials not buying houses like the generations before them, and having too high of a standard of living expectation while spending 45% of their income renting an apartment.
However, you aren't saying it is a good idea for them to buy a house right now. So........what are they supposed to do?

Correct. Shag carpet is terribly ugly and dirty. Houses built in the 70s would be plenty big on average for most people.

I haven't complained once about millennials spending 45% on rent.

Watch your mouth. It was perfect for plastic army man wars with Lincoln log houses.

I was using anecdotal evidence to show TH03 that not everyone pays increases moving out.
I can say the same thing for Addison/Carrolton as well.
You can still get 105 sqft there.
Same in Lantana.
You both are stuck up Dallas (The City) arse and fail to see benefits to living outside the 635/75/35E loop.
Go on though.

It really is. When I see these newer neighborhoods, that is mostly filled up, other than a few houses here and there.. And the prices these cookie cutter homes are going for.. I know it's all about location, but these homes are but just barely to code and the contractors build them as cheap as possible, they are not nearly worth what people are paying for them (well.. I mean they are worth whatever people are willing to pay for them, but people are willing to spend a lot more on houses than they should).
