I remember thinking the generations before me were idiots. Now I realize they were old, had quirks but much of what they said was valid.

You just might be getting advice from idiots. They come in all generations.

If you are related to this this person who you think is an idiot, one of you is right.

Millennial and under baws: what’s the craziest boomer advice you’ve heard?

When i was 14 i wanted to buy an old vending machine and see if i could rig it to dispense VHS tapes. I was told to focus on something that might actually make me money one day, like algebra.

Boomer here. I hate these kind of threads since they all end up in generational sniping.

I am curious what qualifies as a starter home for younger generations today? A home say an hour out from a major metro.

This is what I considered a starter to start home ownership in your 20s.

It’s hilarious you posted this because earlier this morning my 65 year old dad was like “alters on TD are fricking pathetic”

Not speaking up and taking your worker ant pay assuming stuff will change itself?

And by lottery I mean studying the right major, accepting the right job, marrying the right partner, etc.

I will say that speaking up is but one way to affect change, and can easily do more harm than good see Billie Eilish.

And thank you for clarifying the "luck" part - I can certainly agree that the requirements to success are more narrow than in the past.

Idk how far in the past that goes though - think about how difficult social mobility was even 100-150 years ago. You were a baker, son of a baker, grandson of a baker etc. Imo it seems like the 50s-90s were an economic anomaly & we are returning to the (miserable) baseline

If it's all luck, and external factors are the main determining factor for success, then there's nothing that can be done to change it.

Equity of opportunity and equity of outcomes aren't the same thing because equity of effort and work are never the same,

What policies? Transparency where? Define and measure better education?

Using your situation as an example, what would've allowed your peers that went into Petro Ag and finance to be as successful as you in Tech?

I’m confused

Are you saying that going into O&G was a bad decision compared to whatever you went in?

Don’t you constantly worry about your cash flow?

If you just work hard and pull yourself up by your bootstraps, you can be successful"

I came out of college into the 1980s recession that was far worse than anything Louisiana has seen since. I followed the advice above and now have enough for ten very nice retirements. Bought my first house in 1986 right after I was married. It was about 60% complete new construction that had major foundation problems. I finished the house using my own labor for everything except taping and floating sheetrock and HVAC. I did the plumbing, electrical, trim work and painting. I was 23. But you know, bootstraps and other stuff you don’t want to hear about.

1. Establishing better reasons to go to war in Afghanistan?

2. Schools to focus more on stem?

3. More educational materials on power of internet?

Discrediting external factors and saying you have to pull your bootstraps is true boomer advice

Nobody is saying to discredit them, but there isn't a single human on earth who hasn't suffered from a few "external factors" as roadblocks to success. This is just the game of life.

At the time of me graduating, O&G was horrible decision.

Idk where you got that I’m concerned about cash flow but I am not.

Fareplay asks the OT if taking time off was okay.....

His wife is a Dr who pulls a mill a year
He's a worker ant for meta
They have two houses
He has a 100k porsche

He's lecturing others about how inequitable life is for millennials
