I think the actual transmission of wealth should mostly be banned, actually. We should chuck the whole mortgage interest tax deduction scam, prohibit lenders from borrowing to people in the areas that are going to be underwater due to climate change, institute an extremely large (up to 99.5%) inheritance tax on the Jeff Bezoses of the world, and support and nurture affordable cooperatively owned and financed housing. Also, we should get rid of local property taxes, ensure all schools are good, and recognize that the entire "wealth" generated through housing is just another word for profiteering off of racism.
This has to be a troll

Only because they’re too got damned spoiled and think they have to spend what they make on good times and big toys. Live in a modest small home the first 10 years of marriage/ cohabitation. Don’t buy a boat, lawnmower, tv, etc that you have to spend every penny you make to pay for.
Try what we we did when we were younger. It’s called saving and living within your means.

Not reading all these pages, but here is what a sub 1600 sqft 2 or 3bed/2ba costs in some major cities across America. Millenials are not going to live in rural america because the jobs aren't there so no point in comparing bumfrick arkansas to where people are living.
Phoenix - $200K
L.A/Crenshaw - $550K
San Francisco - $799K
Seattle - $445k
Raleigh - $285k
Boston - $460K
My point is - none of these are particularly flashy homes and the cheapest city is Phoenix at $200k where the median household income is $61,000 (net pay roughly $47,000). For a family that is starting out with student loans, a $200k home is a bit of a stretch.
My husband and I bought a house when we were 28 and 34 for $415k in a large city, but it took us a while to be financially stable enough to do so and I realize that a lot of people our age are not as lucky. We were able to afford it by combining bonuses and selling some stock. Not everyone works a job that offers those benefits.

And here is the problem. Either live within your means or find a cheaper place to live.

What jobs are these millennials being offered in rural america?
Posted on 6/5/19 at 9:59 pm to JohnnyKilroy
There are plenty of urban/suburban areas where there are decent job markets and much more affordable housing.
If you want to live in Boston or Chicago that's fine but understand that you'll be paying a premium. There are affordable burbs in the Atlanta and Houston metros just to name a few.

Thanks for confirming.
I figured. Neither is the one in Los Angeles. I sorted the houses by prices so the homes listed are all on the lower end of the scale and I assumed that meant not great neighborhoods. I feel this furthers my point - "affordable" homes aren't really out there in most major cities.

Yes, and then the question becomes: Is the commute worth it? Any money you potentially save on housing gets eaten up by gas, car maintenance and a loss in the little personal time available to you. If I were making $39,000/yr (the median income for a millennial female in 2017), I wouldn't be better off living "in the burbs", even if I had a car that was paid off.
Lets assume I live in Texas where there is no state income tax. My take home would be roughly $2700/month.
Rent: $900
Renters insurance: $20
Car insurance: $80
Gas: $240 ($30/tank, twice a week)
Student loans: $400 (what my monthly student loans currently are)
Utilities: $200 (assuming no cable, basic internet plan of 20 Mbps, normal water and electric usage)
Cell Phone Plan: $80
Food: $400
Fun Money: $200
Total: $2520
Whatever is left would go into an oh shite/savings fund. In this case, I would be able to save about $150/month or $1800/year. Since life is life, you know something will happen that requires me to dip into that fund.
Not to mention I'm gonna need tires, a break job, oil change, etc to keep my car in good condition for that commute.
Note this budget has no line items for real luxuries like vacations, etc. I don't know - I certainly don't think home-ownership is easily attainable for a lot of younger millennials.
I know I am damn lucky in that I have a well-paying job, but I am also very aware that circumstances change and that may not always be the case.

quote:Exactly accept since age 22. 5 acres, a beautiful $150,000 home. The rest of these Millennial's probably have worthless artsy fartsy degrees, are lazy POS that work for SJW crowd sourcing, and have the brains and lack of common sense like AOC.
My son is a 25 year old homeowner, and he would laugh at this bull shite.
The rest could work at google or a upper echelon place, but here is who they are.

Education, health care...you can find a job almost anywhere.

They can find jobs, given the right market. The problem is they don't want to live in rural america. I had a conversation with one recently that was flabbergasted that I live "so far from anything to do". They would rather gripe about not being able to afford a house and other things, than even attempt to make a life elsewhere.
I also realize that Rural living isn't for everyone, but this is the definition of "having your cake and eating it to". If you want to live in a heavily populated area so you can live up to certain levels, then you have to sacrifice other things.

This is where you lose me. If you want to live in the city in order to be in the mix, then you have to sacrifice things. If you choose to move to the burbs in order to afford more things, then you have to sacrifice something. Technically, your time is worthless, so that is easily the first thing you sacrifice.

You also called people hicks because they may live in a rural area; complete with a dollar general put down... You can find a nice home near metro cities. Not everyone wants a cookie cutter house for $250-$375K with matching mailboxes..Just so that they can keep up with the Jones' while they are super duper happy and perfect on FB, but miserable bitches in reality.
I’m talking about single family detached housing in cities and metro areas outside of the south where most professionals actually want to live at. Not some hillbilly town that gets excited cause they finally now have their own McDonalds or Dollar General.
Of course housing is cheaper in many rural areas.
Are you Peter Strzok's side piece Lisa Page?

I missed this post. That's a pretty shitty generalization you made there about rural America.

F these people, but I'm glad they exist. While they sit around complaining, the rest of us will flourish.
