No. Each drill weekend is considered four separate days of training (2 each actual day). You miss a whole weekend, they hit you with four AWOLs
Not AWOL, no such thing is being on leave during inactive duty training.
Also, reserves are subject to the UCMJ, enlisted during duty, officers are always subject regardless of status.

If he isn't showing up, chances are he isn't getting paid by them. He might still receive his gi bill if it wasn't reported that he dropped out yet. The gi bill part will catch up to him and go on his credit if he doesn't pay it back. The longer he is awol, his chances increase of him being put out. He ismt looking at jail time or anything like that. He can miss a year, show up, take his demotions and stay in. I have seen it happen plenty of times with the Reserve and Guard.

I don't know about Guard not being subjected to it or not, but I do know every Guard Unit I have been in has used Article 15 for punishment. This is in the UCMJ. I have demoted troops for missing drill using an Article 15. The Guard in Louisiana with use this.

Scruffy should diagnose him with ADD and get him some legal speed.
That'll motivate his little AWOL arse.

Normally yeah but he took tuition and GI bill money. Kinda complicates things.
Exactly what I was thinking. He's not borrowing money from a friend who he can avoid or "forget" to pay back. They will get their money back come hell or high water.

If he aided any Muslims during his time away from the reserves he can expect to be invited to the White House to meet with President Obama. So yeah, pretty severe punishment.

If he is a member of the U.S. Army reserves then he is subject to the rules of the UCMJ while on Drill status and thus would get an article 15 for AWOL.
If he is a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard then he is NOT subject to the UCMJ but rather the LCMJ which is the LOUISIANA code of Military Justice, which is state law under Title 29 of the Revised statutes. The LCMJ is modeled after the UCMJ and also contains an AWOL prevision and he would be subject to punishment via article 15 or courts martial.

They'll put him out for unsatisfactory participation, it's not a big deal.
Active duty is completely different though.

Had a guy show up one day in our barracks. I ask, "who's the new kid?" Was told he's a reserve guy that went AWOL. They processed him into active duty, stripped his rank, shaved his head and threw him in the brig. We saw him picking weeds and trash marching around the base getting barked at until he had served his sentence. Booted with a dishonorable.

Think it was the USMC reserves, but could be wrong.

they will kick his arse out, and he will lose his education benefits.. Other than honorable discharge

How fricking hard is it to make one measly weekend a month? You did basic training which was 2 months. You can't squeak out time to serve your country for 18 hours a month? And a drill weekend isn't that hard. You just do a little work, eat a little chow and then go home.

my roommate was marine reserves and just stopped going to drill for a year or so. he got a general discharge so he was happy. he had some big contingency plan if they wouldve given him an OTH, but he was fine with general
he had been trying to get a medical for a few months but they kept giving him the runaround, so he was like frick this, im just not going

Situations like these are really up to the commander's discretion. Best case scenario is that this guy's immediate supervisor is able to get him to come in and make up the missed UTAs or he just gets a "bad year" of points. That just means that he can't count that year towards a retirement.
If he was a dirtbag troop before this all took place then they will probably start the process for a general discharge. I don't think a dishonorable discharge is on the table for missing a few drills.

Scruffy needs better family friends.

Since moving from the Army to the National Guard, I have learned a lot about what makes the branches unique.
In the La Nat Guard if you miss 8 mutas consecutively I can have an arrest warrant put out to haul your arse to jail.
Two mutas make a single day on a drill weekend.
National Guardsmen are subject to UCMJ action on drill status at the commanders discretion. you pop hot and you better believe they will come after you. Unless of course you have high ranking family members on the right side of the political structure in the Guard. Then they will be lenient and even make it go away.
Just read Saintwest post about it being LCMJ instead of UCMJ. Not sure of the major differences

What sort of punishment is he looking at?
It varies. They could pursue lots of remedies, up to and including jail. He will probably have an IRS hold on his income tax refunds, if they decide to try to get the student aid back.
Just depends on how hardass they want to be. Most likely he will just get kicked out. I haven't put anyone out in a long time. I'm in kind of an insulated bubble right now in which I only deal with field grade officers (or 95% of the time) and do not supervise any NCOs or enlisted.
