Becuase if they can send part time Army to get a job done without taking Active Army away from their assignenment/mission, why wouldn't they?

I was in Afg for over 2 years, worked with a ton of Air Force guard/reserve guys that were Intel analysts. They were absolutely as skilled at their jobs on average as the full timers. And most wanted to be there unlike the active duty ppl.

I passed through Lightning a few times, and a lot of the RC East FOBs as well. FOB Vulcan was my "home" for the year.

It is.

Isn't the National Guard basically a state militia full of guys with full-time careers outside the military?

Yes but they compete for federal funding with other NG units

We need to stick it to those farming Afgans. They pose such a threat to our way of life. The Germans would have been scared.

Army Reserves are almost all logistics units. Many Combat Arms Brigades and Battalions are in the National Guard.

The entire military is being downsized every year due to budget cuts.

All deployments are rotational. National Guard and Reserve Units are part of the rotation.

It's working. It's not stupid and it's not a waste of money or resources. Anyone saying that is uninformed.

The good old Army National Guard. I'll never forget when they arrived at FOB Lightning, went on a mission, and called for fire on themselves on accident. Troop movements in the theater were shut down for a week while everyone had to do remedial training and have a fire control officer on every convoy. What a shite show they were.

I'm sure that's never happened with regular army soldiers amirite? I doubt regular navy guys would wreck any destroyers either.

Guys who talk shite about the Guard or Reserves are usually threatened by them in some manner or they are insecure. All branches have good people and all have shitbags. I could point to examples of both. But that's not important nor is it the point of this thread.

The Army is going through a phase where they are experimenting with NG and Reserve units being on equal footing with Active. See the recent realignment with 10th mountain and Texas NG and 173rd ABN. Government believes it makes the Army more well-rounded.

Thats been happening since 2003, and SOME Guard units with a 30-45 day mob time can perform to the standard. Most of those units are in southern states.

Louisiana currently has two companies and one battalion forward with another company (HQ) and battalion on the clock.

And as mentioned the deployments are back.

FWIW the 256th is arguably one of the best infantry brigades in the country. They had a big impact in Iraq in 2010.
