Surprised nobody has mentioned Lord Kitchener. He was in a cabinet position in WWI, but his upbringing, and experience in the British military system let to millions dying in WWI under his direction. If you really want your mind blown, read, "The Psychology of Military Incompetence."

The British Army leadership gave them plenty of material. I suggest a physical book with a bookmark, as I found myself dropping the book and rubbing my temples in absolute amazement at how dumb some generals acted.

Not saying George McClellan was an effective general. I have read he wasn’t a big advocate of pressing the war against fellow Americans. He was more about finding a peaceful settlement.

Not a General, but Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, CNO made a fine mess of the Navy when I served.
As for Generals, Westmoreland is up there with the worst of the worst.

has to be McClellan. wouldnt attack unless he had an outrageous man advantage, Lee outmaneuvered him at every turn during his campaign on Richmond. hopelessly inept although most Union generals were for much of the war. funnily enough ran for president against Lincoln in 1864

MacArthur. Tremendous ego cost a lot of American lives.

Hitler. His high command didn't have a choice but to go along with his increasing insanity. He stretched himself too thin and at that point he'd won. If he'd held lines and continued production Europe would look a lot different right now.

Hilter had a multitude of health issues impacting the decisions and choices he was making, though.

Franz Siegel the Union commander at the Battle of New Market. He was chased from the field by cadets from the Virginia Military Institute.

In my years in the Air Force, it's Merrill McPeak; his claim to fame is to change the fatigues to BDUs and then change DBUs (name tags, rank, etc.) every few months for reasons no one knows.

anyone saying that Westmoreland or MacArthur were the worst generals ever dont know much about history. both had significant flaws for sure, but they were both good, if not great, generals.

Westmoreland has been villainized and made to look like the cause of the Vietnam disaster for one simple reason - to save LBJ's legacy.

Macarthur was an egomaniac who did a lot of fricked up shite, and ultimately it led to his downfall. but he was also an absolute fricking war dog who knew how to crush an enemy.
