I mean I can see how the military would start to look pretty great out of high school when you can't afford rent and food with 2 jobs

Sure, there’s some nerds in every branch. I’ve even had to supervise a few kids that should have never made it through Marine Corps training to become a Marine. Some slip through the cracks. That does happen.
However; even the nerdiest, weakest, biggest pussy in the military has a bigger set of balls than someone who can just talk shite about how it’s dumb to join. Coast guard baws have a bigger set than that.

I'm a mid-career professional (early 30s) planning on joining the Reserve within the next year.
I've been subscribed to several cross-branch and Army subreddits, and I've noticed that "DO NOT get married" is a commonality in those discussions as a general piece of advice for those joining and/or in the infancy of their service. Irrelevant for me (married 9 years w/ 2 kids) but interesting that it seems to bear repeating, specifically to the younger guys enlisting straight out of high school who want to lock down their HS girlfriend.

I see it every single day and you're almost 100% correct. For the most part, enlisted people in the military are absolutely retarded. The only thing you forgot is the 23 year old buying a Camaro SS and agreeing to pay 20% interest on the loan the day he finds out his new wife is pregnant.

Nothing wrong with getting married early...other than women are just much sluttier than they used to be when it was more common occurrence. If you get married early...but your wife has still been with multiple guys even before that...count on a divorce

The military does this thing where they’ll match your asvab and GT score with your job. Unless you just scored incredibly well and still chose to be a grunt (some do)
If your experience has been working around a majority of dumb people, then most likely your asvab score synced up with theirs. I wouldn’t argue with anyone in saying that officer is absolutely the way to go, but many don’t know that. The recruiters don’t just come out and say “go officer bro, frick being enlisted”
All the subreddit and reddit message board info is relatively new. We didn’t have access to a lot of that information around the time frame I joined. I took the asvab in high school, made in the 90s with a GT of 120+ and had no clue what that meant. A lot of the enlisted side come from lower means than the officer side. A lot of us grew up not going to private school and college wasn’t a guarantee so we know nothing about being an officer. There’s definitely some dumb and some intelligent people in the 2 million personnel military, but it’s not as if society is just putting all the resident retards in. I was just at MEPs New Orleans the other day and they were DQing kids left and right. About half of the ones going actually got approved, and these were kids who had already been filtered out in the recruiting process.
It’s much harder to get into the military these days than it is to get into college. With the asvab piece dictating job; if your experience has been with dumbasses, you’re likely a dumbass yourself.

Wouldn’t have impacted my paycheck. I was never in the Army.
Unless you’re saying Army because you’re one of these uninformed that uses the term “Army” in attempting to encompass the entirety of the Armed Forces branches.

I live very close to one of the largest military installations in the world. It's not the people I work with, it's the culture I'm immersed in daily. I can't help but be around it all the time.
Also, you have no idea what I do in the military.

Dependapotami are real and if you let them they will destroy your life. They want your BAH and Tricare.

The military sort of incentivizes marriage.
Get married in the military and you instantly receive:
Higher Pay
Better Healthcare (for her)
Better housing
I fell into the trap of marrying way too young when I was in the Navy. We were 20 and both were enlisted but she was being medically discharged. She got pregnant while we were dating and it simply made sense to get married to cover the bills.
We lasted 11 tumultuous years but towards the end, we were completely different people on differing paths.
I love my two kids but will always regret wasting so much time in a relationship that was holding me down.

Truth. Even with a high asvab, already in college, or about to go, the local recruiter by the mall is not going to push a prospect to the O route. That is going to take some effort on the prospect finding an OSO either on a campus or going into their office or at least going on-line to get it. However, if the candidate was smart, they would go Enlisted first, go to college, then go back as an Officer. Obviously, without a wife since the Marines don't issue them.....

A buddy of mine went that route. Enlisted for 6 years, went to college and rejoined as an O1-E
He's now an O5 and serves as a liason to foreign militaries. Married, kids, and travels to awesome duty stations throughout the Pacific.

Because they are gone all the time and don't have time to go looking for poon, they want it waiting at the house when they get a free weekend.
Just like oil/gas baws that work 30/30.
Of course the divorce rate is about 98% in these relationships, then ole baw has to send her check for 18 years

Yep, a Mustang in the USMC. Probably outranked some of the instructors at OCS who probably still gave him shite.
