Truck drivers and garbage men have a more dangerous job, police work doesn't even make it into the top 10 ranks of dangerous jobs.

Excuse me if I am mistaken here as I have not kept up with all of the thousands of updates coming from Ferguson. I believe I read that the police have had like 20 cruisers destroyed, rocks and molotov cocktails thrown at police, and actual live rounds being fired at the police last night.

You would think that with all of their GI Joe gear they would have the place under control by now, but it probably has something to do with what you have stated, they have come up against a crowd that will fight back and suddenly playing soldier has lost its appeal.

Why is it a shame? They tend to make very good officers. They are mature and disciplined for the most part.

So how is militarilized police running the roads any different than the actual military in the streets? An oath? A title?

This is history 101. This is one of the MAIN details the constitution or bill of rights prevents happening. People with authority and guns telling us what to do and what not to do.....

I heard one of the problems yesterday at lunch with a bunch of guys at a table referring to us as "civilians". "Civilians will do this and that". I look over and it is a group of cops.

How about you shut the frick up. Police do none of what you just described. They sit back and hand out traffic violations or arrest leroy for dealing dope. The typical small town cop will never go into the back of town at night to investigate a murder or rape. Go back to your DWI checkpoint and "protect and serve" buddy.

And the original hopes of having a civil discourse on the point at hand, militarization of police, dies a quick death.

I will respond like an a-hole every single time someone else makes an a-hole comment first.

In high school we would go into the bad parts of town and shoot roman candles at houses & people walking on the street. Yeah, we were assholes. No, we weren't scared.

To be fair the tpos have more awesome guns than they did back in the days of Mayberry.

Stop with this Mayberry myth.

Chicago's murder rate today is roughly the same(around 15 per 100k) as it was in the 1930's when gangsters had open running gun battles in the streets with fully automatic Tommy Guns.

Fortunately Tommy guns were eventually banned & Prohibition ended which curtailed the violence.

Most crime today (outside some serious gangs) is committed with the basic & essentially inaccurate handgun.

How about you address his misguided comments in the vein of the thread's intended purpose?

Not that I disagree with you but don't you think you could have made your point much stronger by saying something like:

And it is statements like yours that show some policemen consider the citizens a threat and something they have to "put up with." If you truly believe that type of thinking, you need to get out of law enforcement. Your job, YOUR CHOSEN CAREER, is to protect those who can't or don't want to "put on that bullet proof vest and go deal with the worst of the worst." If you find that a burden, go drive an ice cream truck.

When you were growing up, did you ever want to be a cop? When you left H.S., was go and sign up at the academy the first thing you did? Probably not. Not many people want to be cops. Not many people like cops. Police aren't getting applicants in record numbers. So, one can understand the need to protect what police we have. They're not cruising the streets in swat gear looking to kill people, that gear is just for volatile situations. As long as they keep it that way, there's no problem here.

I've been in the army, and I served in Iraq. I've been in more life threatening situations since becoming a cop then being a soldier. The only difference is in Iraq I had more fire power then the bad guys. In the states no one cares but other cops about us having better hardware then the bad guys. I do Have a "i will do what ever it takes attitude", because I have a family that wants me to come home.

Ferguson Cop to Protesters “Bring it, all you fricking animals! Bring it!”

This was one cop that KNEW a camera was on him. Makes you wonder what the rest of them think that know better not to say things like this with a camera on you.

Which is the EXACT got damn point of our argument. As soon as these cops toy around with military grade stuff they think of us less as people they protect and serve and more so as those who are civilians who answer to them. As if we're in fricking Fallujah or something.

Nah, journalists didn't get arrested in Fallujah.
