Truck drivers and garbage men have a more dangerous job, police work doesn't even make it into the top 10 ranks of dangerous jobs.
exactly
the rampant paranoia among police is ridiculous and fuels their violence against civilians IMO

Yes but if you need to hammer in a nail, wouldn't you rather have a hammer than have to use your shoe.
What I'm saying is there are times when they need to seek and destroy an enemy who is heavily armed.

No one doubts some cities do need heavy equipment, however, does Bunkie PD? I think not.

When was the last time automatic weapons were used against police? Serious question, I don't think I've ever heard of it happening, I know it has though.

The North Hollywood Shootout. Seventeen years ago. And I guess the Stockton bank robbery last week where the police shot a human shield LINK

Automatic versus semi-automatic? Doesn't really matter. The question would be better phased as large caliber weapons versus a handgun.
That being said, the LA Bank robbers had automatic weapons. The crazies in Waco had automatic weapons. Several militia types have had shootouts with police using automatic weapons. So it does happen. But not very often, if ever, in the hood. More the crazy white boys that sling machine guns around.

It's very hard to find numbers because the key word the media uses is assault weapons which can be any semi-automatic

My take on all of this belly aching, just vacate the street. You police the street and solve your own crimes. I'm sure the general public and do a way better job. You can round up a posse and go lynching across the US. You don't have the balls to walk beat or go into places you don't even dare drive by. It's easy to sit in your comfy little dorm room, living room or the office you work in and arm chair quarterback what police do. So until you're willing to put on that bullet proof vest and go deal with the worst of the worst, just shut the frick up.
Did I say do away with police? I said it is not the hazardous duty it is claimed to be by those trying to justify imitating SEAL team 6. I have walked the streets of places far more dangerous than anywhere in America, and been in situations that make Saturday night in Chicago look like boy scout camp, so I will continue to call it like I see it from my office chair.

So who/where are these heavily armed enemies that the police need to out gun?

Here is one from 2012. I think this was in Dallas.

Here is one from April of this year.
ELIZABETH — Four men suspected of stealing valuable car parts from an auto salvage shop in Elizabeth exchanged gunfire with city police along Routes 1&9 at the start of this afternoon's rush hour before they were taken into custody after their stolen truck collided with a police cruiser, authorities said.
The dramatic string of events began around 3 p.m., police said, when the men, armed with automatic weapons and handguns, burst into Bayway Scrap Metal on Amboy Avenue in Elizabeth, tied up several employees in a back room and drove off with a U-Haul truck loaded with catalytic converters, anti-pollution devices made with precious metals, Deputy Police Chief John Brennan said.
Police were alerted to the robbery within minutes and quickly spotted the U-Haul on Routes 1&9 North, he said.
The driver of the truck tried to elude police, weaving through streets to try to evade the pursuing officers. During the chase, the suspects fired on the police car and an officer returned fire, Brennan said.
The truck and a police car collided on North Avenue, between Routes 1&9 and Dowd Avenue, and the truck’s occupants scattered on foot but were quickly apprehended, Brennan said. Police recovered an automatic rifle, a submachine gun and three handguns, as well as a bag full of money, he said

I'm sure there are quite a few instances of police vs. AK-wielding bad guys - whether automatic or semi. Police having AR-15's isn't really the "militarization" that is frightening people - well, me at least. They've had those for more than a decade. It's all the camo, the pointing weapons at civilians, the "snipers" staring through scopes, the shite loads of tear gas being hurled willy-nilly, the attitude of us vs. them.

That is true. Also, those outfits and that gear WILL change the way most of them act. Until we clean up the thugs I have no problem with them having that stuff if they would only stay in areas like Ferguson but doing what they did in Boston was disgusting,

The type of weapons are not necessarily the problem, it is the mindset created by adopting military type garb and vehicles and tactics. It promotes thinking that anyone not in uniform is the enemy, if you pay attention to the lingo used be a lot of these "tactical squads" you would think they were hunting insurgents in Iraq.

Dude. Not even going to go there but that is one part of the whole mess that is largely undisputed. They even recovered some post-fire along with the long lists of full auto parts they were ordering that brought about the whole mess. That being said, definitely a topic for another thread.

I will sum up the militarization of the police forces across the country with this little saying: "If you give a man a hammer, everything is a nail".
