Anybody know any tigers in the wild that have an HMO that allows them to receive radiation therapy for cancer?

Since we decided to adopt this guy's years ago when money was good then we have an obligation to take care of him even during tough times.

The veterinary community can probably learn a lot by giving these treatments. Doing this might pave the way to finding a way to beat the cancer in the future

I’ve always been conflicted about doing chemo or radiation on animals.

When humans receive these treatments we know why. We know these treatments, which are painful, miserable, and can feel like torture…will eventually help us get better.

To animals, they don’t know the end-goal. They just think you’re torturing them. I understand if they have a great chance at survival, but if it’s a terminal diagnosis, I feel awful putting them through painful treatments. Obviously, if the treatments aren’t too painful, go for it, but that is rarely the case with these things.

Not sure what your definition of huge amounts of money are but I would guess the vet school is doing the treatment meaning it won't cost that much. Also TAF would probably foot the bill if need be.

Probably the last live mascot we'll have. Hope he's pain free for his remaining time.

Maybe this was the problem. need to get pups that will become socialized around humans early, so it will go in the trailer.

Damn. We had just gotten him when I was a freshman. I don't know the typical lifespan. This seems too young.

Most of the previous Mikes lived into their late teens/early 20s.

Why is this even a thought? I would wager tigers at LSU live better than any other captive tiger in the world. Not to mention the unique experience it brings to the vet school.

I doubt they spent millions on the habitat for it to go unused.

The decrease in money coming in from the state is more than covered (by tens of millions) every year by tuition hikes. I'm sure TAF chips in some for Mike also, and the treatment would probably be cheap or free so studies can be done

This really is sad.

That being said, you know damn well that they will never put this mike back in the cage before football games. Too much stress on a cancer ridden tiger, and PETA will lose its mind.

Better than almost everywhere, minus a few top zoos.

It isn’t just the very nice habitat, it’s the 24/7 care from a world class vet school down the street as well.

Tigers born in captivity cannot be released. It’s the humanitarian thing to save one from a bad situation in a small cage and give him the best captive life we can.
